[prpoint] Survey findings on "impact of social media" during the ensuing General Elections

dear friends

Last week, we had announced an online survey to study the impact of social media during the ensuing Indian General Elections.  We thank all the respondents, who shared their views.  We got 203 quality responses. The findings are available at

http://www.primepointfoundation.org/survey0209.pdf

1.  The internet users in India may be around 10 percent of the total electorate.  Many of the young internet users are using social media.  Presently, many opinion makers, young journalists are part of the social media.  Hence, the social media may influence the mainline media also, through such opinion makers.  Though the observations are not absolute, they are broad in nature.

2.  Around one-fourth of the respondents feel that social media will have heavy impact to influence the youth in the coming General Elections.  Nearly half of the respondents feel that it would have moderate impact.  Nearly one-fourth do not anticipate any serious impact.

3.  Around 60 percent of the respondents feel that mobile phones will generate impact to influence the voters.  (please remember that India has around 350 million mobile users).

4.  About the preference to the political parties, there is a neck to neck preference for both Congress alliance and BJP alliance.  Though Elections announcement has not come and alliances are not finalised as of now, Congress and BJP allianes are preferred equally to the extent of 22 to 24%.  Third Front is preferred by 6 to 8%.  This pattern is seen right from the start of the poll.

5.  Around 35 to 37%% of respondents have not yet decided.  This is a big chunk.  Probably, after the campaign starts, they may take decisions, based on various alliances.  Around 12% do not wish to vote.

6.  In our view with nearly half of the internet community not decided, probably, social media and mobiles will have a significant  role to play in the coming Indian General Elections 2009.

7.  Please download the report from the above link.  The findings are only broad in nature, subject to the limitations of sample size.  But they are definitely a broad indicators.
