You know what is happening in Andhra Pradesh these days. People and parties are fighting for and against separation, planting hopes elsewhere in the country for a dozen such demands. But this is about communication, merely the fun of language and nothing to do with any other feeling.
The otherday, when there was a bandh in Hyderabad and when the offices and establishments were being force-closed, I had been to Press Club to spend some time with journalist friends.
Discussions were on, all about separate Telangana and united Andhra Pradesh, at every table.
The discussion was about the previous day's funny happening in the outskirts of Hyderabad towards Vijayawada, in which a mob of miscreants claiming themselves as pro-telangana karyakarthas stopped a car and in order to confirm the nativity of the driver, tossed a half-a-rupee coin before him and was asked to tell what it is. When the driver said "autana" (means aut anna i.e. 8 annas) he was allowed to get into Hyderabad city. Had he told it as "ardha rupaya" (half rupee), the mob might have confirmed him as non local.
Similarly, a few days ago, when Andhra region was agitating, the same kind of people, claiming as Samaikhya Andhra karyakarthas, stopped vehicles and kept asking the drivers on the outskirts of Vijayawada city towards Hyderabad, showing the curry leaf of 'hibiscus cannabinus' (Roselle in English, Pulichakeerai in Tamil, Ambaadi in Marathi, Pitwaa in Hindi, Pundi pallya in Kannada). People who said it as "gongura" (in telugu) were allowed to enter into Vijayawada and those who uttered it as "punti koora" (also in telugu) were not.
I am reminded of the security pass-word "lalla pa lolla" used to stop japanese infiltration into India, in the guise of burmese, during the 2nd World War. Japanese can not utter the consonant 'L', instead they do it as "R". Therefore, when they were asked to pronounce it, they did it as 'rarra pa rorra' and were caught by military forces confirming them as japanese. Japanese English is Engrish. More precisely it is Japlish or Janglish just like Konglish for Korea, Singlish for Singapore and Chinglish for China. So is our Inglish. Sounding funny ?!?
