Subject: [Media Forum] Re: {Indian PR Forum} Good PR for Ciongress? Adoption of a boy who gave newspaper to Rahul Gandhi for free

Good politics has always been a mix of national agenda and local issues. Somehow, just somehow, the metro population ends up getting swayed by parties' national agenda, but the population in the rest of the country - specially rural and semi-urban constituencies - is largely influenced by local issues. What's more, acts of kindness - such as the one by Rahul Gandhi - do work. Be it the lack of big local news or the mere presence of a Gandhi family in the city, the newspapers love to carry such news. Why? Because, at least on the face of it, such acts is 'not politics', with no political gyan, promises and blah blah. Another strong reason - People love to read about mortal acts of immortal souls like Rahul Gandhi.

In countries where political PR is highly evolved (e.g. USA), you will still see photo of a Presidential candidate holding up a child during his campaign. Not once, but several times. It's an age-old PR gimmick that still works.... time after time, every time.

But that's only about one specific incident in one part of the country and there's no doubt that it will get the party additional votes in that region. And I'm also very sure that Congress has already included similar 'acts' in its rest of the campaign.

However, these acts can only give you a marginal edge, and are definitely no substitute to core issues such as employment, infrastructure (power, roads, irrigation, etc), education and price-rise.

But if giving away one newspaper for free to Rahul Gandhi could land you a job, I'm sure Rahul will not have to buy a newspaper.. ever! :-)

Is this PR? Will such incidents help in image  building?
Or is it jut to be dismissed a spontaneous reaction?
Let's discuss.

Congress 'adopts' boy who gave newspaper to Rahul Gandhi for free

BhopalMadhya Pradesh Congress has "adopted" a 10-year-old hawker who gave a newspaper for free to Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi, because the latter had no change.

On Saturday, state Congress Chief Kantilal Bhuria met Kaushal Shakya and his father Dulichand Shakya at the party office in Bhopal and announced, after felicitating the boy, that Congress was "adopting" him.

Mr Bhuria said the party would give Rs. 1,000 per month to the boy, who had told Mr Gandhi that he wanted to become a doctor.

Senior Congress leader Sajid Ali has offered a job to his father, a school drop-out, as a peon at a college run by him.

Kaushal, a class 5 student, sells newspapers. On April 25, when Mr Gandhi was heading for Boy_who_gave_newspaper_to_Rahul_Gandhi_new_295.jpgRaja Bhoj airport in a car, Kaushal approached him and requested him to buy a newspaper.

Mr Gandhi took the newspaper and handed him a Rs.1,000 note, but the boy returned it, saying he had no change, and he was offering the copy for free.

The Congress Vice President then had a brief chat with him.
