Total agree with you Mr Srinivasan. Every word of it. We need to intensify the movement in various forms in 2012 and ensure that the nation finally has a powerful law to curb corruption, and then move towards other positive changes and reforms in the sphere of judiciary, electoral process, police system, civil administration, etc.

For most of common people Anna is a ray of hope

It was because of him we got right of information act

Hi all

In the past three days, Indian citizens have been fooled by the Honorable Members of Parliament.

Lokpal bill has been pending with Indian Parliament for the past 45 years, for one reason or other. After the break of major scams like Commonwealth games scam, 2G scam, Indians started realizing the need for some strong machinery to curb corruption.

Even the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was playing safe protecting the scamsters. Only after the intervention of Supreme Court and Media, the scamsters were arrested in all the major scams.

Even after getting enough proof of misuse of BSNL telephone connections for the family owned TV network, involving thousands of crores of loss to the Government, Maran brothers have not yet been arrested or brought before judicial system by the CBI. This has lowered the credibility of even the top investigating agency like CBI.

With this background, when Anna Hazare started the Anti corruption movement in last April 2011, millions of Indians stood behind him spontaneously. At that time, the Government promised to bring a strong Lokpal bill.

In spite of the fact that the Government spokespersons were ridiculing the movement itself, when Annaji started an indefinite fast, the whole nation again stood with him. This made the Lok Sabha to assure the nation that they would pass a strong Lok pal bill in the winter session.

In the winter session, the Government introduced the Lokpal bill. Though, it had lot of flaws, the people thought, something is better than nothing. After 8 hours of debate, Lok Sabha passed the bill on 27th Dec 2011 midnight. The constitutional status for lokpal was defeated.

Again when the bill was introduced on 29th Dec in Rajya Sabha, the intention of all the members were evident right from the beginning. Those, who watched live telecast in TVs would have predicted the results. Even from 6 PM onwards, all the channels started predicting that there would be chaos towards the end to avoid voting. As expected, one RJD member started plucking the papers from the minister and tore the papers in the open house, when the Vice President of India was chairing the session.

Even the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha (Vice President of India) was a silent observer of this ruckus. When a crucial bill was being debated, the Chairman did not order the marshals to remove the member from the House.

This situation also led the people to believe that the whole drama in Rajya Sabha was choreographed by all the vested interests and enacted verbatim.

The whole ruckus was going on till the midnight without any control. The people, who were watching the TV would have understood the intention of all the parties.

Finally, the Chairman adjourned the House sine-die. Though ruling and opposition parties are blaming each other for the ruckus and chaos, I feel all the parties have formed alliance to shame India.

All the parties do not want their Governments be investigated by any authority at Centre and State level.

I hang my head in shame for the behaviour of our Hon'ble Members of Parliament.

While we are at it trying to mobilise funds, I have another small, simple solution.

If all the members of various zonal, chapter committees put in Rs 2K each exclusively for the conclave, once a year - every yea, we should be able to mop up close to Rs 4 lakhs! - considering that we have some 20 committees with at least ten members each!

Mumbai chapter shall make the beginning....!

Rod R. Blagojevich, the former governor of Illinois, was sentenced on Wednesday to 14 years in federal prison for 18 felony corruption convictions, including trying to sell or trade the Senate seat that President Obama left behind when he moved to the White House.

The sentence, which fell just short of what prosecutors had asked for, came about an hour after Mr. Blagojevich apologized in court to residents of his state, to the judge in his case and to his family.

What Mr Narendra is true, but to a limited extent only. The damage if any caused by print media is much less than the one which the electronic media or the Net is capable of doing. The question of having more stringent laws or powers needs a larger debate. Any amount of censorship or even a milder version of self-regulatory discipline surely has a larger ramification. There is no denying the fact that the government needs stronger teeth, a stringent law to put an end to the menace of obscenity in Facebook, derogatory or lascivious material in google or in Yahoo! etc. But that is what CERT-In has just been empowered w.e.f. 27 Oct 2009. How many sites have been monitored, how much traffic has been monitored how many intercepted and how many blocked with the powers vested on it, by CERT-In so far? What is the HR adequacy and technical capability and administrative infrastructure given to CERT-In? Do the people (or even the Police) know that CERT-In has got these powers? Not that Kapil Sibal does not know these. Working straight under his Ministry, he certainly knows the powers vested with CERT-In.

There is a reasonably justified fear that if the government gets any new powers (to block or otherwise restrict) the objectionable websites, how much of such powers will be used, misused and abused? Can anyone guarantee that the proposed leaks by Wikileaks (scheduled for sometime early 2012) of the foreign invested black money details, will not be blocked by the government taking cover under some such authorities?

Powers certainly are required, but with due procedures in law and under proper supervision. Let that be strengthened and be made effective. I am sure, self-discipline will NOT work in India. We see that no traffic signal is obeyed when there is no traffic cop around. And these foreign players like Microsoft, Google etc. (who have met Kapil Sibal yesterday) are not known for their obedience.

Abundant information encourages culprits

3. Last week, we had cyber security workshop organised by the Cyber Society of India. One of the speakers, involved in investigation of crimes shared an interesting information.

A house was burgled and based on the complaint from the owner, police arrested the culprit. During the enquiry, the cultprit told the police that he identified the house for burglary, based on the information in facebook. The owner of the house had given an advance information in his facebook about his planned trip to a health resort with family. After reaching the resort, the person had also confirmed his visit with the photographs in the facebook status. The culprit who was closely watching the facebook, leisurely visited the house and committed burglary. Since the owner had given the schedule of his return, etc., the culprit visited the same house next day also to complete the burglary properly.

Many of the hackers of email and online banking depend on the information freely available in the facebook and other social media sites.

Though, I personally feel that monitoring by the operators may be technically difficult, we need to create more and more awareness about this among the parents, teachers and the students to avoid misuse of social media, leading to offence.

Such negative use of social media happens, because of the lack of knowledge by the users on the real strength of social media. Social Media can be used for more useful things, than merely as an excitement media to post trash messages and for sharing information, leading to cyber crimes.

Kapil Sibal has done a good job by generating a national debate on the social media, to understand the strength and weakness of this media. The members can debate as to (a) whether a separate regulation may be needed or not and (b) what are the contents that can be treated as objectionable, without infringing on freedom of expression. .

Greetings from Columbia Journalism School, where I serve as Dean of Student Affairs, supervising Admissions, Career Services and Student Services/Student Life.

I am writing to ask if you can share this note with journalists you know who might be interested in learning more about Columbia's newish MA program in specialized journalism. The deadline is Jan. 15, 2012; if not for this year, then for next! It's a nine-month post-graduate program starting next fall and you don't need the GRE to apply.

OVERVIEW OF THE M.A. PROGRAM: The prestigious Master of Arts program,
inaugurated in 2005, is for experienced journalists who wish to study a
specific subject area, such as science, health and the environment; arts and
culture; politics or business and economics. Unlike our Master of Science
program, which focuses on teaching basic reporting, the M.A. is designed to
equip experienced journalists with subject-area expertise so that they may
cover complicated issues in a sophisticated, nuanced manner.

For instance, students develop the knowledge that will allow them to situate
news events in their larger context, to ask more informed questions, and to
evaluate competing claims made by sources. The program imparts a deeper
understanding of journalism and the forms it takes, and the focus is on
content as much as on skills.

The students do an intensive seminar in their major, along with advanced
courses in other departments of Columbia University specializing in topics
of their interest. They will also design and create a Master's Thesis over
several months of study working closely with a faculty editor as well as
outside experts. The end result will be an in-depth, compelling piece of
long-form journalism (8,000-10,000 words for a print story, or the
equivalent in another medium).

THE SCIENCE, HEALTH & ENVIRONMENT MAJOR: the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
Program in Health and Science Journalism

This program is an excellent opportunity for journalists from around the
world interested in deepening their knowledge of health, science and
environmental issues and improving their ability to tell stories about these
critical topics.

The Science seminar, taught by distinguished professors Marguerite Holloway
and Jonathan Weiner, covers everything from quarks and black holes to the
quirks of the human genome; from Galileo's funding troubles to NASA's
travails. Whether students study the contemporary debate over global warming
or evolution, the seminar starts back before the fever began. Students learn
to see science in the widest perspective and to write about it with all the
tools of narrative nonfiction. Most applicants are experienced journalists
who have demonstrated the potential to become leading science writers. The
field of science writing is changing explosively, and this course is
designed to make our students the very fittest to survive in it, adapt to
its transformations, and shape its future.

Other courses will allow M.A. students to work closely with science, health
and environment departments throughout Columbia University.

Hi,

I agree with Srinivasan that freedom of expression is not absolute but subject to certain limits. Defamation laws are applicable and it is for the individuals to take action against the persons concerned. As to what is objectionable content - the government should look into those content that are anti-national; those that damages the fair name of President, Prime Minister and other Ministers and certainly not the government officials and others.

All the electronic media are now discussing about the latest announcement by Kapil Sibal on social media monitoring. All TV media are debating 'emotionally' about this announcement, This announcement is branded as an attack on freedom of expression. As one of the persons using social media for the past 14 years aggressively, i share some of my observations. I invite members to share their views.

Excitement to minor offenses

1. In the past three or four years, after the aggressive emergence of facebook, I find more than 90 percent of the information shared there are either trash or of only excitement. I also get lot of feedback from various quarters about the misuse of information and data, There are lot of reports about the middle class children indulging in minor offenses in the name of excitement. When they are detected, these children get into psychological problems. Such instances put parents and children in an embarrassing situation, before others.

Messages violate the law of the land

2. I find lot of messages with vulgarity, anti national, hate messages against other religion or caste, or person etc. They cannot be defended in terms of 'freedom of expression' or 'excitement'. IPC definite some criteria for all materials for open publication. As per Indian Law, whatever the law applies to print and electronic media also equally applies to all other publications. As the famous saying goes, " your right of swinging a stick ends when other man's nose begins'. That is freedom of expression should not infringe on privacy of others or should not be against the law of the land. No citizen of this country can claim immunity from the law, for publications. Facebook and other social media are open publications and are governed by these IPC. This is in addition to the cyber law.

Abundant information encourages culprits

3. Last week, we had cyber security workshop organised by the Cyber Society of India. One of the speakers, involved in investigation of crimes shared an interesting information.

A house was burgled and based on the complaint from the owner, police arrested the culprit. During the enquiry, the cultprit told the police that he identified the house for burglary, based on the information in facebook. The owner of the house had given an advance information in his facebook about his planned trip to a health resort with family. After reaching the resort, the person had also confirmed his visit with the photographs in the facebook status. The culprit who was closely watching the facebook, leisurely visited the house and committed burglary. Since the owner had given the schedule of his return, etc., the culprit visited the same house next day also to complete the burglary properly.

Many of the hackers of email and online banking depend on the information freely available in the facebook and other social media sites.

Though, I personally feel that monitoring by the operators may be technically difficult, we need to create more and more awareness about this among the parents, teachers and the students to avoid misuse of social media, leading to offence.

Such negative use of social media happens, because of the lack of knowledge by the users on the real strength of social media. Social Media can be used for more useful things, than merely as an excitement media to post trash messages and for sharing information, leading to cyber crimes.

Kapil Sibal has done a good job by generating a national debate on the social media, to understand the strength and weakness of this media. The members can debate as to (a) whether a separate regulation may be needed or not and (b) what are the contents that can be treated as objectionable, without infringing on freedom of expression. .

I welcome Mr Desikan's arguments.If one were conducting a PA campaign for government's decision on Retail FDI,how do we meet this? Befroe any PA campaign is designed it is necessary without bias to assess the counter view points and arguments.Any decision bya firm or government should be in the long term interests of people,'greatest good of the greatest number'.No PR/PA can defend the indefensible and the paymaster must be told the truth about this,rather than promising what cannot be delivered.Gandhiji refused a brief because the brief was not suiting his ethics.I donot know whether there are any PR agencies who wants to follow his example.
As I said in another post,can we take different view points and build a PA campaign for both for and against Retail FDI.This is a stimulating discussion.Thanks,narendra

I hope you will not join the "committed", crowd to support the FDI in retail.

If 10 million jobs are created as claimed by the supporters of FDI, nearly 40 million jobs will be gone as small vendors through out the country will be wiped out, making them unemployed. Similar thing happened in 16th century in our country when the foreigners took away our native INDIGO, blue which was synthesised by the Europeans and introduced in our own market with finished blue colour imported cloth when 10 lakhs Indian lost their jobs and their craft.That is why gandhi campaigned for boycott of foreign cloth.

Do you know that some of these supporters are also the Indian persuaders of the Government; they are current retailers and owners of the current retail chains, who have huge debts; By palming off their 51% equity, they will be rescued but 40 millions will lose their bread winning ability, may well become destitutes dependant on the State for their survival.

Imagine a situation when our producers ( especially agriculturists) initially will get good prices for a few years and then these FDIs will come down heavily on procurement prices, reducing our farmers to become beggars to sell their products to get SOME return. When that happens, our Agri production will go down drastically. This in turn will force the FDI Retails chains, seek suppliers of products to go to China for the produce. Instead of equalling or bettering China in production capacities, we will lose our economic power.

Would that not be the most painful day?

FDI in Retail-Politically not argued well

The central government has cleared FDI in multi-brand retail. This decision was pending since 2005, the year when domestic retailers rushed to occupy retail space before deep pocket foreign retailers enter India. Now they hope to leverage their big and small foot print in metros and Tier I and II cities and towns.

The Government decision has evoked political opposition from UPA allies, opposition and state governments. Besides opposition for gaining political advantage, there is articulation of apprehension some genuine and others not justified.

Worse Timing

As usual UPA has shot itself in the foot even while announcing a highly beneficial opening up. The decision package is well rounded to address vital concerns on farm, marketing infrastructure, job creation fronts and transition period in which the traditional retail or 'Kirana' constituency needs protection. A bold and good decision has to be timed well, too. Yet, UPA could not have chosen a worse one. Inflation is raging and the opposition thinks it can to ride to power on this people's misery.FDI decision looks like a post -dated cheque issued by a habitual defaulter for households who want immediate cash to meet the price rise. The government, mired in corruption scandals, appears divided and adrift. The overhang of trust deficit renders every government decision suspect. Had this decision come during the less boom time of 2005-06,perhaps it could have had a smooth sailing.

UPA was guilty of not engaging in political communication to very large constituencies that would reap the rewards of this decision. Take the case of the farmers. When FDI from PEPSi in 1992-03 and began investing in farmers in Punjab to grow long shelf life potato,tomatoes,chillies and paid them remunerative prices, they silenced the critics in Parliament by arguing the government"s case. Today Punjab was the first and perhaps only state to welcome Delhi's FDI in retail decision. Again to recall the protest against PEPSi the then Punjab government and PEPSi partnered in enabling MPs, media and opinion makers to visit state farmers and see for themselves the benefits accruing to cultivators.

If the country wants a second hi-tech green revolution and address the wide-spread distress in the farm sector, it cannot come from meager official interventions alone. ITC's e-Choupal that has organized thousands of small and medium land holders and the mutually beneficial partnerships that have developed in s several states between large food processors and farmers show the advantages which could accrue to agriculture sector from business-led initiatives. And no politician worth his rural or urban vote can claim that these have not created new jobs all along the value chain.

The fears about Retail FDI can easily countered by showing to the critics how MTR,Haldiram,Bikanerwala, and many domestic brandsgrew out of the misplaced apprehensions entertained after PEPSi introduced Lehar bhujia and branded chips.Indian have forgotten that Modern Bakeries started by the government to process wheat as bread and potato into chips had evoked such fears.This unit introduced wheat bread to rice eating households but did not replace local bakers.

Post Harvest Losses

India is the 2nd largest producer of food and vegetable and third largest fruit producer in the world; ranks second only to Japan in inland fish production. All this quantity fails to reach the consume.About 15 million tonnes of food grain are lost due to poor post harvest storage and in- efficient marketing chain. This quantity could feed a population the size of Bihar+. And this critical gap costs the farm sector as whole Rs50, 000 crores every year, according to the Food Processing ministry. Post-harvest technology for primary (rice hulling etc) and secondary processing of produce has the potential to create rural industries and jobs. All-round development of agriculture is a state subject yet it is in distress. This should have been politicized by the center and shown that retail FDI could rescue states and their farm and rural constituency.

The limited number of consumers who have had access to organized multi-brand retailers or verticals like Reliance Fresh would vouch for their gains. The fact that in some places such stores have become targets for attacks clearly establish the vested interest of the middle-man and what the ordinary consumer is losing. If India ever wants to assure people that what they buy and eat is not impairing their health and promote product eco-friendliness, organized retail is the only way. Enforcement of food standards Act, consumer protection Act and compliance with international standards is well nigh impossible so long as millions of kiranas service the consumers. It is a surprise that the government is not presenting such facts to people and seeking the help of consumer organizations to counter the protest.

Most glaring is the silence of the business chambers, organized retail and real estate players who stand to gain the most now. The government has failed to enlist their support for arguing its case. Several players entered the field only to claim first mover advantage, waiting for this opportunity. This could be used against a few big players who might be engaged in building opinion against FDI.

The government and the ruling party does not have collective memory to draw upon. When India had to drastically amend the Copy Right Act to make it comply with WTO requirements.BJP,Janata party and left were opposed to it, since they were opposed to a new Patents bill.They had spread the canard that the common person, or a student would lose access to global knowledge base. Obviously the parties opposed did not care for protecting Indian IPRs like films,songs,authors,poets. The government had to pass this new copy right law soon. We approached this constituency spread across the country and suggested to them to organized themselves and protect their own IPRs against piracy.After discussions among themselves about the pros and cons, these persons felt that the new copy right law was in their interest. They sent appeals to the parties opposed to the new law explaining their view and seeking support. This worked and a new copy right law was in place.And this preparation was before a government decision.

India joining WTO again was politically opposed.BJP affiliate d outfits were running a grapevine campaign of disinformation with cassettes tapes, videos generating all kinds of fears. The ruling party was professionally guided to counter this grass root level disinformation with facts, allaying fears and the promise of new benefits. And a truce was sought by the opposition. There were no full page print or TV advertisements that have doubtful attention..

UPA leadership knew the opposition but did not prepare long before announcing the decision. Even while making the announcement, the present Commerce Minister, instead of taking credit , should have acknowledged the farsightedness of BJP/NDA for considering Retail FDI nearly ten years before. In May 1998, when Prime Minister Vajpayee announced the second nuclear explosion, he readily acknowledged the contribution of the previous Congress governments to the development of the capabilities for the N-bomb. The Congress could not have denied its role in the new situation.

In trying to change the perception that the government decision making machinery was stuck in its tracks, UPA leadership has rendered implementation of a good decision more difficult. The retail FDI announcement should have been preceded and succeeded by political public affairs campaign.

Hi all,

Same thing will happen after two or three years on launch of FDI ; as happening with Business Process Outsourcing/call centres now When BPO lauched in India, facilites given to employees/customers were tremendious. Now slowly-slowly becoming worst as in Government Sector. Employees/customers being harassed for changing them weekly from one process to other and not allowing time to learn things and thus depriving them from earning of P-4 amount in this way employees are frustrated and leaving jobs. As there is no watch dog on them. In same way FDI will work. Customers and employees of FDI will be treated same way after few years.

FDI in Retail-Politically not argued well

The central government has cleared FDI in multi-brand retail. This decision was pending since 2005, the year when domestic retailers rushed to occupy retail space before deep pocket foreign retailers enter India. Now they hope to leverage their big and small foot print in metros and Tier I and II cities and towns.

The Government decision has evoked political opposition from UPA allies, opposition and state governments. Besides opposition for gaining political advantage, there is articulation of apprehension some genuine and others not justified.

Worse Timing

As usual UPA has shot itself in the foot even while announcing a highly beneficial opening up. The decision package is well rounded to address vital concerns on farm, marketing infrastructure, job creation fronts and transition period in which the traditional retail or 'Kirana' constituency needs protection. A bold and good decision has to be timed well, too. Yet, UPA could not have chosen a worse one. Inflation is raging and the opposition thinks it can to ride to power on this people's misery.FDI decision looks like a post -dated cheque issued by a habitual defaulter for households who want immediate cash to meet the price rise. The government, mired in corruption scandals, appears divided and adrift. The overhang of trust deficit renders every government decision suspect. Had this decision come during the less boom time of 2005-06,perhaps it could have had a smooth sailing.

UPA was guilty of not engaging in political communication to very large constituencies that would reap the rewards of this decision. Take the case of the farmers. When FDI from PEPSi in 1992-03 and began investing in farmers in Punjab to grow long shelf life potato,tomatoes,chillies and paid them remunerative prices, they silenced the critics in Parliament by arguing the government"s case. Today Punjab was the first and perhaps only state to welcome Delhi's FDI in retail decision. Again to recall the protest against PEPSi the then Punjab government and PEPSi partnered in enabling MPs, media and opinion makers to visit state farmers and see for themselves the benefits accruing to cultivators.

If the country wants a second hi-tech green revolution and address the wide-spread distress in the farm sector, it cannot come from meager official interventions alone. ITC's e-Choupal that has organized thousands of small and medium land holders and the mutually beneficial partnerships that have developed in s several states between large food processors and farmers show the advantages which could accrue to agriculture sector from business-led initiatives. And no politician worth his rural or urban vote can claim that these have not created new jobs all along the value chain.

The fears about Retail FDI can easily countered by showing to the critics how MTR,Haldiram,Bikanerwala, and many domestic brandsgrew out of the misplaced apprehensions entertained after PEPSi introduced Lehar bhujia and branded chips.Indian have forgotten that Modern Bakeries started by the government to process wheat as bread and potato into chips had evoked such fears.This unit introduced wheat bread to rice eating households but did not replace local bakers.

Post Harvest Losses

India is the 2nd largest producer of food and vegetable and third largest fruit producer in the world; ranks second only to Japan in inland fish production. All this quantity fails to reach the consume.About 15 million tonnes of food grain are lost due to poor post harvest storage and in- efficient marketing chain. This quantity could feed a population the size of Bihar+. And this critical gap costs the farm sector as whole Rs50, 000 crores every year, according to the Food Processing ministry. Post-harvest technology for primary (rice hulling etc) and secondary processing of produce has the potential to create rural industries and jobs. All-round development of agriculture is a state subject yet it is in distress. This should have been politicized by the center and shown that retail FDI could rescue states and their farm and rural constituency.

The limited number of consumers who have had access to organized multi-brand retailers or verticals like Reliance Fresh would vouch for their gains. The fact that in some places such stores have become targets for attacks clearly establish the vested interest of the middle-man and what the ordinary consumer is losing. If India ever wants to assure people that what they buy and eat is not impairing their health and promote product eco-friendliness, organized retail is the only way. Enforcement of food standards Act, consumer protection Act and compliance with international standards is well nigh impossible so long as millions of kiranas service the consumers. It is a surprise that the government is not presenting such facts to people and seeking the help of consumer organizations to counter the protest.

Most glaring is the silence of the business chambers, organized retail and real estate players who stand to gain the most now. The government has failed to enlist their support for arguing its case. Several players entered the field only to claim first mover advantage, waiting for this opportunity. This could be used against a few big players who might be engaged in building opinion against FDI.

The government and the ruling party does not have collective memory to draw upon. When India had to drastically amend the Copy Right Act to make it comply with WTO requirements.BJP,Janata party and left were opposed to it, since they were opposed to a new Patents bill.They had spread the canard that the common person, or a student would lose access to global knowledge base. Obviously the parties opposed did not care for protecting Indian IPRs like films,songs,authors,poets. The government had to pass this new copy right law soon. We approached this constituency spread across the country and suggested to them to organized themselves and protect their own IPRs against piracy.After discussions among themselves about the pros and cons, these persons felt that the new copy right law was in their interest. They sent appeals to the parties opposed to the new law explaining their view and seeking support. This worked and a new copy right law was in place.And this preparation was before a government decision.

India joining WTO again was politically opposed.BJP affiliate d outfits were running a grapevine campaign of disinformation with cassettes tapes, videos generating all kinds of fears. The ruling party was professionally guided to counter this grass root level disinformation with facts, allaying fears and the promise of new benefits. And a truce was sought by the opposition. There were no full page print or TV advertisements that have doubtful attention..

UPA leadership knew the opposition but did not prepare long before announcing the decision. Even while making the announcement, the present Commerce Minister, instead of taking credit , should have acknowledged the farsightedness of BJP/NDA for considering Retail FDI nearly ten years before. In May 1998, when Prime Minister Vajpayee announced the second nuclear explosion, he readily acknowledged the contribution of the previous Congress governments to the development of the capabilities for the N-bomb. The Congress could not have denied its role in the new situation.

In trying to change the perception that the government decision making machinery was stuck in its tracks, UPA leadership has rendered implementation of a good decision more difficult. The retail FDI announcement should have been preceded and succeeded by political public affairs campaign.

Now the government wants the FDI funded retailers to invest in back-end infrastructure like cold storages etc.

It seems now people do not believe what the government says which is termed as trust deficit.

You are absolutely right , i dnt want to blame the media for creating this Hype ,at first it was started through online then only in all other mediums ,the other thing that i have to mention , if x media covered a particular story ,then the Y media wants to cover the same story with more information .This thing not only happened in case of Kolaveri ,i saw many stories like Kolaveri .Finally ,We have to ask Media only one thing "Why this Kolaveri ".

I completely agree with you Ms. Sandhya. I am quite shell shocked to see the newspaper carrying this story in the front page. This is unbelievable - where are the values? this only goes to show how much the publication cares about it's front page. To me, the story is not worth reading it beyond it's entertainment column.

This is not a healthy trend at all.

It could not get worse than this! A front page story in a leading publication, feature in the news channels... the media hype around "why this kolaveri di" has indeed created a kolaveri in me. Has media run out of stories or has the priorities changed? It really pains when some worthy stories which is pitched is dumped and stories like this get centre stage. Am really curious to know what could have excited media to go all out with this kind of exposure, is it the rajni's daughter directing the movie or the national award winner dhanush singing the song, whichever way i look at it, my opinion is it doesnt deserve the importance it has garnered.

Would like to hear the views from the doyens in the PR and media industry and the youngsters.
