Re: [prpoint] Making of Vishwaroop Crisis - A case study

dear all,

srini has done a great job in summarising the entire Vishwaroopam crisis and the lessons to be learned from each group putting them in perspective and arranging them in nice chronological order for easy read and capture of the events in a comprehending manner.

i agree with all the views he has expressed about the groups. however i missed in the hindi version the dialogue where omar allegedly says he received his early training in hyderabad and in northern india, and surlprisingly it has gone unnoticed in the north and andhra while its counterpart in tamil nadu of ttraining in madurai and coimbatore created a hornets nest.

meanwhile, i draw your attention to hindu's review of the movie going into finer details. but i would like to take exception to the passage quoted below. attached are my observations just below it.

The Hindi Review : Qte Other Kamal Haasan staples are amply evident, like the writer's unflagging determination to interpolate into his screenplays segues to pet philosophies (about God, Hitler), technology (nuclear oncology, Faraday shields) sexual hints (a wife walks in on her husband being unzipped by another woman), outré props (a Mughal-era dagger, nitroglycerin pills, pigeons that are decidedly not agents of peace, and even unceasingly dripping water), and a wicked sense of humour.

My reaction to this as pointed out by team of researchers i refer to while i normally write any article on fillms:

The review mentions very apparent things without even going beyond the surface. Here are the subtexts of all those things that the writer missed.

1. The Mughal relic dagger was shaped like a trident indicating that it is a relic from the Meo muslim community who were Rajputs forcibly converted to Islam under the rule of Aurangazeb. Most of them method acted the role of Muslims out of fear while secretly worshipping gods like Shiva, Hanuman and Kali. It was a reference to the titular character's real-life method acting attempts as a Jihadi in Afghanistan and as an effeminate, impotent Kathak dancer in New York (Kamal's stand-in for the Hindu)

2. What the writer identifies as attempts at subversion are suggestive interludes meant to convey a whole lot more. A fine example would be the scene where Rahul Bose playfully threatens to shoot the kid who wants to be a doctor to instill fear in him (later copied by the kid when he is playing with his own friend) and Kamal's character aids in instilling the idea of fighting back in the kid's mind by pointing the kid's finger back at Rahul Bose eliciting a supressed guffaw from Salim. This demonstrates the way Rahul Bose instills fear in his tribe by paralysing them and offering Jihad as the solution to the very same paralysis.

3. Even the opening line that labels the film as straight forward doens't mention the changing perspectives depending on whoever is recollecting the events in the flashback (Wife, Omar, Salim - for example, the effeminateness is more pronounced in the wife's version of the flashback).

I hope those who have not seen the movie as yet, keep this in mind and watch the movie which will actually reveal the depth of research that Kamalahasan has done in the film and generally one would miss these nuances.

happy viewing.

Dear Mr.Srinivasan

Very enlightening and informative but accurate analysis. I think every detail was well connected and conceived in order to present the ills of one and all concerned.

Compliments, you had rightly indicated the role of media, selfish, for their ratings highlighted a non national issue, hope media also play a minor role on major national problems and priorities.

Continue the good work.
