[Image_Management] Global Communication Summit on Corruption-Free Society in Abuja

Lately many may have been disturbance about corruption and ills in the society and almost everywhere. It is for this reason that in collaboration with other relevant PR professional bodies Nigeria will host a global conference. detailed note is given below

Timex Communications, an Abuja-based PR and communication agency, in association with the Federation of African Public Relations Associations (FAPRA) and the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), has scheduled a Global Communication Summit for February 24 – 26, 2008 at Le Meridian Hotel, Abuja. The theme is Building a Corruption-Free Society: the Challenges of Communication.

A press statement signed by Kabir Dangogo, the chief executive officer of Timex Communications said that over 500 delegates are expected to attend the summit from a dozen countries. These are United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Ghana, South Africa, Mexico, India, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Tanzania and Nigeria.

According to the statement, the PR & communication agency believes legislation alone cannot solve the problem of corruption on the African continent and that communication can be a veritable vehicle for the sensitisation of African societies on the war against corruption. The statement added that this was what informed the agency's decision to plan the summit.

Communication professionals, information and public affairs managers across the country and beyond have been invited to the summit which coincides with the ongoing national and international discourse on the need to curb corruption worldwide.

Ribadu's Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices & Other Related Practices Commission (ICPC) and other corporate organisations have partnered with Timex Communications to ensure a hitch-free anti-corruption summit. Malam Nuhu Ribadu presents a lead paper on the Gains & Challenges of the Anti-Corruption War, while the ICPC chairman, Justice Emmanuel Olayinka Ayoola presides over the session as chairman.

World Bank development communication specialist, Paul Mitchell, Derrick Pieters, president of the Canadian Public Relations Society, Engineer Lawal Abubakar Yar' Adua, group managing director of NNPC and Dr Rilwanu Lukman, the special strategic adviser to President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua are among the facilitators.

Other speakers include the presidents of FAPRA, IPRA, IPR Ghana and CIPR UK. Kaye Whiteman and Donu Kogbara, both London-based media consultants will be talking on the media and corruption in Africa.

Other issues to be treated at the summit include the legislature and the anti-corruption crusade by Honourable Faruk Lawan; the challenges of nation-branding in Africa by Yvonne Johnson, director general of the South African International Marketing Council (IMC) as well as the challenge of being successful & ethical in banking by a highly successful Nigerian banker.

Kano State Governor, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau also will speak on his administration's societal reorientation programme, Adaidaita Sahu: just as Nigeria's Minister of Information and Communications, John Odey will be speaking on the Heart of Africa Project: Nigeria's Untold Story. Dr Yemi Ogunbiyi, chairman, Tanus Communications, Mr Stanley Egbochukwu, editor-in-chief, BusinessDay, Mr Biodun Shobanjo, Vice Chairman, Insight Communications, Professor Jerry Gana, Malam Musa Al-Faki, Director General, Securities & Exchange Commission and Mr Lolu Akinwunmi, CEO, Prima Garnet/Ogilvy will also be facilitating.

Corporate and public affairs departments of banks and other corporate organisations as well as PR and advertising agencies have been invited to showcase their products and services at the summit. Government agencies have also been invited to use the occasion to enlighten stakeholders on their responsibilities. Registration fee for FAPRA and APCON members is N35, 000, non-members N45, 000, Council members N25, 000 and students N10, 000.
