Re: [prpoint] Right to Information and Indian Companies

Dear Srinivasan,

One of the risks to reputation of Corporates comes from this Act,though not directly.
Various licensing and regulatory agencies like the Pollution Control Board,SEBI, Company law Board, government investment promoting agencies Like the Board Of Approval for SEZs in the Commerce Minsitry,FIPB in Finance, Labour Commisioner, patenting authority, etc can be routinely queried under Right to Information act about private parties who come under their purview.

Failure to regulate/enforce regulations and laws by official authorities in collusion with private parties will thus come to be exposed.Today corporate good governance means compliance plus.It is not just fulfilling the legal requirements but conforming to societal ethical norms.

As a matter of fact, no private investment/production activity takes place  without some government approval, regulations and compliance with laws.RTI will get attracted in all such cases.
In a recent presentation to a seminar on Communication with Governments,I had stressed that Governments are likely to be drawn into private corporate parlour in many ways, and therefore, transparency and fair practices with all stakeholders, and value chains becomes an essential input for reputation risk management.

Dear friends

One of our members Avinesh has suggested a discussion on the RTI. I
hope by now, you might have read the ezine (dec issue) on the subject.

The impact of RTI in the days to come will be more felt by the Private
and Public Sector organisations. Private Sector companies should not
under-estimate the impact of RTI act on them.

As suggested by Avinesh, this RTI act brings in more transparency and
can be taken as a good PR opportunity also.

At the same time, companies providing wrong information or appearing
to be suppressing information may also face trouble from the
stakeholders. (Please read the case study of Poompuhar Shipping
Corporation that was published in our latest ezine)

I invite members to share their views and experiences
