Re: [prpoint] How to select University Courses after 12th std? An interview with VC of Anna University

Sir,

That was a very informative podcast.

If someone asks me what was the biggest challenge I faced in my personal life, my answer will be the time I had to convince my parents that engineering is not my career and went ahead to become a part of the PR industry. Till X Std., I thought my future was in engineering because I had no exposure to other courses. Besides the trend was to pass 12th std with extra-ordinary marks, write entrance exam and get into a medical or engineering college no matter what your interest is in. So I too should follow that path and chose Mathematics and Science as my main subjects in 12th Std. Soon I realized that I would have arrears and only arrears if I join an engineering college. I took the initiative and started browsing on various other courses that would match my interest and was introduced to the field of media. I had to face a lot of issues from my relatives because I was going against the norms of the society and choosing an offbeat career. Luckily my parents supported me when I explained a PR executive's job profile though initially they frowned hearing my decision.

I feel that right from the beginning, parents should take the initiative and provide knowledge to their kids on the different kinds of jobs that are available. Help the children match their talents and skills with the long list of careers. During school life, a student's world revolves around classroom, homework, exams and good percentage. Schools too should actively involve in giving exposure to the students about the job opportunities. My humble request to all the parents is not to force their children to take up a career that society wants them to but to help children achieve their dream career. If my parents had persuaded me to take up engineering, I wouldn't be what I am now.

Warm Regards

Rashmi

Now this an admission season. The parents of the students who have completed 12th standard are in a confused mood. There is a notion amongst the parents and students that only Engineering Courses in Information Technology are best suited for future prospects. Arts and Science courses are not preferred. Is the hype of IT Engineering courses a 'myth' or 'reality'?

On 22nd June, 2008, we telephonically interviewed Prof. R Radhakrishnan, Vice Chancellor of Anna University, Coimbatore to clarify on these points and to guide the parents and students. Anna University is one of the leading technical Universities in India with more than 100 affiliated engineering colleges. This podcast interview will be useful for the students who are seeking admission in University courses and also pursing various education in different colleges in India.

Prof. Radhakrishnan suggests that a minimum basic degree with computer skills are sufficient to get placement and to develop future. prospects.  He even goes to suggest that students with 10th standard qualification can also learn the skills that are needed by the industry and can go for jobs. Then they can earn more qualifications through distance education. He also says that students should improve the English language communication skills.

Prof. Radhakrishnan suggests that after completing the Schooling, the students should (1) self evaluate themselves and find out their interest with the help of their parents and teachers and (2) identify the field of education, based on the interest.

Please listen to the interesting and useful podcast in the following link.  I am releasing this in the group, so that you can pass on to the students who are seeking college admissions.
