dear friends
Last week Dr Narasimha Reddy and Mr Surkund wrote in the group about the need for inclusion of social media in the education.
From this academic year, Symbiosis Institute of Media and Communication (SIMC), Pune has introduced 'Social media" contents like blogs, wikis, podcasts, social networking tools, cyber law etc. as part of their curriculum in their MBA (PR) course. I have also helped them in designing the contents. This paper will carry 100 marks with 30 hours of teaching. To my knowledge, SIMC is the first institution to introduce social media in their curriculum. Since social media is connected directly with the technological changes, from the experience gained in the first year, the contents of the syllabus may also be revised periodically.
While, I see many educational institutions / universities have not yet included even "internet" in their mass communication and journalism courses, SIMC has taken the emergence of social media seriously and started pro-actively exposing their students to this new area.
Social Media has become a very powerful tool globally in the hands of youngsters. As communication professionals, we need to get ourselves familiarised with the changes that are happening around us due to technology. Such inclusion in the curriculum will help the students to use the social media in a responsible manner for their advantge. (Even cyber law is included in the paper)
On behalf of this group members, I congratulate Prof. UKC, Dean of SIMC (also member of our group) and his team for such pro-active measures.
