What you just described is the power of WOM- Word of Mouth Communication, the aim of all PR & Advertising. WOM was the main carrier of information in those days. Gandhi's actions generated massive WOM. No wonder Gandhi has been described as Master Communicator of all times. But he did never aim to manipulate the channels of communication around him. On the other hand he made sure 'content' was potent enough to last the distance. In the month of August 2008 Indore witnesses a remarkable thing. A five evening 'Bapu Katha' by Narayan Desai. I got several facts first hand from this epic.
Finally a thing about WOM. It is now established that there was an ancient river 'Saraswati' that once flowed in the state of Rajasthan. The scientists who were investigating the path frequented by this mythical river visited Rajasthan desert. They met an old women who told this group that she heard from her elders having heard from their ancestors about a river that once was there in that area. Finally the scientists have given the period when the river dried up and ceased to exist. That was some 50,000 (Fifty Thousand) years ago. I am sure it sounds unbelievable but it is true. I think it is a case of WOM having survived 50, 000 years. Such is the power of WOM.

Today (2nd Oct) is the birth day of Mahatma Gandhi. Almost all the Televisions and Media n India have been recalling the memories of Indian freedom movement.
Just now, I was watching 'Gandhi' film telecast by a channel. I was just thinking, how in the vast country like India, Mahatma Gandhi and other freedom fighters were spreading the freedom message and mobilised the people against the British for getting freedom, through non-violent methods and non-cooperation.
Presently, as communicators, we find it difficult to communicate a message with all the communication gadgets and facilities. In those days, (before 1947), there were only few print media and radio. The entire message of freedom campaign could reach the entire country successfully and involve them.
I feel the sincerity and effectiveness of the message are the core reason for the success of the entire campaign.
