Re: [Image_Management] Mahatma Gandhi birthday - World Non violence day

Dear All,

It is a true and unique example of how the whole country stood as one in a movement which has marked the whole of World history. I personally would rate it even further than the American War of independence or the French Revolution which also had similarities in many ways. In any revolution, there is always a core idea, which is propounded by a leader, accepted by regional bases and then it shapes up as a Nationwide movement.

Mahatma Gandhi was the face of the entire movement, with his idealogy of non-voilence being the core essence. I feel this can be analysed in a Communication perspective, though I do not write-off the greatness of any leader or his/her contribution in any way.

The British got control of Bengal in 1757 after the Battle of Plassey and it took a further 100 years, till 1857 for possibly the first Uprising. Though not an organised effort, it did change the policy for India as it became a state under the Mornarchy instead of a colony under the East India Company. By 1914, when Gandhi came to India, his policy of Non-Voilence was tested in South Africa. Also, the leadership of Tilak, Lala Lajpatrai had created pockets in different parts which had a common goal of Independence. Beyond 1920, the country was in search of a leadership, which Gandhi inherited in many ways. In addition, he had support of then regional leaders in Sardar Patel, Vinoba Bhave, Gaffar Khan etc who proliferated the Non-voilent protests in a big way.

Gandhi's skill as a communicator can be applauded on the most elementary communication principles: Clarity, Simplicity, Replicable across geographies.

The first being that he was highly effective in conveying his ideas to his immediate circles. Simplicity in communication is the key factor here. Each person with almost no instruction knew what he/she was expected to do.

Beyond this point, when his idea was taken down to the grassroot, the message never got diluted, and even if it was not directly spoken from his mouth, it was simple enough for a lay man to recognise it as the Gandhian philosophy. Its hardly a wonder that anyone who applied it was recognised as a "Gandhivaadi".

The action used to be equally simple. Hence, even though the top brass of leaders was put behing bars, the 8th August Non-Cooperation movement was effective in every sense. It simply meant that nothing in favour of the government was to be done any more, no matter where you were in India.

Subject: [Image_Management] Mahatma Gandhi birthday - World Non violence day

dear friends

Today (2nd Oct) is the birth day of Mahatma Gandhi. Almost all the Televisions and Media n India have been recalling the memories of Indian freedom movement.

Just now, I was watching 'Gandhi' film telecast by a channel.  I was just thinking, how in the vast country like India, Mahatma Gandhi and other freedom fighters were spreading the freedom message and mobilised the people against the British for getting freedom, through non-violent methods and  non-cooperation.

Presently, as communicators, we find it difficult to communicate a message with all the communication gadgets and facilities.  In those days, (before 1947), there were only few print media and radio.  The entire message of freedom campaign could reach the entire country successfully and involve them.

I feel the sincerity and effectiveness of the message are  the core reason for the success of the entire campaign.
