[prpoint] Beware: Customer un-friendly ATM systems of Kotak Mahindra Bank and HDFC Bank

dear friends

We discussed earlier about the horrible experience of one of our
journalist friends while drawing cash using Kotak Mahindra's ATM card
in HDFC ATM machines. Kotak Mahindra Bank was insisting 45 days for
re-crediting the amount. We also quoted a similar instance at Delhi,
transacted like this and the customer got the credit after 50 days.

We had requested by endorsing a copy of our mail to Ms Usha Thorat,
Deputy Governor of RBI for thorough investigation as to why it should
take 45 days. She also acknowledged our mail and stated that she was
looking into this. Mr Desikan, Founder of Consumers Association of
India also took up this issue.

Now Kotak Mahindra Bank, after our taking up the matter with RBI
re-credited the amount to the journalist member. Now, I have received
a mail from HDFC Bank (to whom I have endorsed the copy) confirming
that Turn Around Time to resolve the ATM cash withdrawal disputes is
45 days, as per the VISA/MASTER Card regulations, which is applicable
globally. (mail given below)

I am not able to understand as to why it should take 45 days for these
Hi Tech Banks, to resolve the withdrawal claims. Even big public
sector banks like SBI are able to settle the claim within a week.

I am again endorsing the copies to Ms Usha Thorat, Deputy Governor of
RBI and to Mr Desikan, Founder of Consumers Association of India, for
thorough investigation.

Moral of the whole instance. Please avoid taking ATM cards with
private sector banks, particularly from Kotak Mahindra Bank and HDFC
Bank. Now that HDFC has officially confirmed that it would take 45
days for them to settle the ATM related disputes, it is better we
avoid them.

With so much of technology, the officials Public Sector Banks, with
whom I had interacted say that they get the log sheet every day and
even with large volume, they would be able to reconcile within two to
three days. It is surprising that Kotak Mahindra and HDFC with
their limited volume demand 45 days.

Dear Mr. Srinivasan,
This is with reference to your e-mail dated 25/01/2009.

We understand that a Kotak Mahindra Bank ATM/Debit Card was used in
the HDFC Bank ATM machine. However, the cash was not dispensed.

In such case, the Card holder needs to report the complaint to Kotak
Mahindra Bank as the same Bank's Card has been used to withdraw cash.

Kotak Mahindra Bank will be in a better position to address the complaint.

We clarify that Turn Around Time to resolve the ATM cash withdrawal
disputes is 45 days, as per the VISA/MASTER Card regulations, which is
applicable globally.

Warm Regards,
