Call to help students harness potential of such media and avoid
their misuse.
Our Bureau
Chennai, Jan. 29 In view of its growing importance, academic
institutions should include social media in their curriculum. This
would go a long way in ensuring that such media are not misused by
students to mislead their peers, said Mr K. Srinivasan, CEO, Prime
Point Public Relations Pvt Ltd, Chennai.
He was speaking at a BL Club event held at Ranipet Engineering
College, Vellore. Addressing the students at the event presented by
Indian Overseas Bank, he said that world over, 22 per cent of the
population used the Internet, while in China and India, Internet
penetration stood at 20 per cent and 6 per cent respectively. With
technological growth, India would double its Internet penetration in
three years, he said.
Mr Srinivasan also emphasised that social media such as blogs,
podcasts, wikis, and social networking sites such as Facebook, Orkut,
Linkedin and Myspace had become the preferred medium for interaction
among youngsters across the world, including India. Social media
could
provide the opportunity and support needed to develop the skills,
knowledge and network necessary for self-improvement.
He pointed out that due to the lack of knowledge amongst the seniors,
students and youngsters were left to themselves for learning social
media. Youngsters were misled by their peers for the wrongful use of
the social media, which might attract cyber laws.
"To get the best out of the social media and to avoid its misuse by
students and youngsters, it would be better to include this subject
in
the school and college curriculum. A few institutions have started
including the subject in their syllabus," he said.
He also advised the students to start writing blogs with quality
content. Writing blogs regularly would help the students develop good
communication skills, besides meeting experts on the Net who could
improve their prospects for career growth. Further, corporates could
use social media such as blogs and podcasts for brand-building and
marketing strategies.
Dwelling on the importance of the social media, he explained how the
US President, Mr Barack Obama, had used this media extensively to
communicate with youngsters, which in part lead to his landslide
victory. In the same way, he insisted that social media would play a
greater role in the coming general elections in India.
