Indeed a momentous day for India. What a start! As I watched the ceremony unfold, it made me wonder how much of India was reflected in today’s Academy Awards. There were songs and dances and there were repeated mentions of Slumdog Millionaire every few minutes. AR Rahman’s songs were simply mind blowing. There was a fusion song and dance between East and West as well. In school I had heard “East is East and West is West and never the twain shall meet”. Well, today that learning was proved wrong to the delight of millions of viewers across 200 channels that telecast the program live.
The interest evinced in the Oscars this year goes beyond India. In Australia, for example, people got up early to watch the show from 6 am. They are celebrating there too as they would be in many other parts of the world.
It is indeed a very proud achievement for Indian cinema not only because of the new definition it provides to the cinematic genre but it also underscores the technical finesse that India can clearly boast of. Congratulations to the team of Slumdog Millionaire and to AR Rahman, Gulzar and Resul Pookutty in particular for a sterling performance and acclaim much deserved.
And let us not forget the marvellous recognition for Smile Pinky, the 39 minute short documentary film shot in and around Mirzapur and the holy city of Varanasi made famous by brilliant author and maverick scholar Pankaj Mishra’s The Romantics. This film is a great boost for the NGO-s who are doing such fantastic work but often go without recognition. Congratulations!
Well, in the end it is all about hope and dreams going forward, isn’t it?
