RE: [prpoint] Is India Premier League (IPL) greedy to earn money risking the Nation's security?

Hello,

I am really not sure where all this debate is going. Are we against cricket? Are we against IPL? OR Are we saying postpone IPL?

If the Govt and IPL can work out an amicable solution regarding security, I think it should go ahead. The rest will be decided by the International IPL players who may or may not volunteer to come to the sub-continent.

It is not about one being given priority over another. If both can be worked out together, then it must happen. Why is it it Black or White, IF a little Gray can be worked out.

Yes, if the security personnel aren't enough to handle the mega event and the elections, then probably, alternate dates could be looked at. But why are we so adamant and arguing about THIS Versus THAT?

Rajiv Arvind

Hi there,

what will happen if cricket is stopped/banned for one year ? Other sports will get more encouragement.  To-day, with 20-20, 0DI and what not, it has just become another total commercial proposition. Public memory is short. what happend to one of famous Cricket aptain ? There may be many such 'scams' which never came to surface.

Do the world champions in Badminton, Billards, and other form of sports get even 5% of what these crickteers get ? when Tendulkar hits a 'duck' we hear such bad things about him from the same people, who praise him sky high when he hits a century.

Let us ban cricket for one year, till the elctions are over and the results are declared and new govt. starts functioning. Or again is it another 'hung parliament' ? Or another 'khichdi' govt. with alliance 'tadka' ?

Hi

My feel is that election should not clash with IPL. At the end of the day election will definately take the centre stage. Who knows IPL may be good bet for politicians to spread their party message.

Its the duty of security force to provide cover to every one no doubt in that, but why should government strain security forces for cricket. Nations development should be priority than development of few individuals. Lets have it after May 13, 2009 once the new government comes in. Whats the hurry to conduct a cricket match in between tensions...

best regards

Be sportive!

Surprising to note that those who are associated with the sporting event are not sportive nor willing to appreciate which is more important for the nation- an election or a game. When the country's Home Minister has given a warning/suggestion, then it should be taken in right spirit- that is nation is bigger than the club sport which is what IPL is all about. Remember the IPL cup is not a competition amongst the handfull of cricket playing nations. It is a competition amongst clubs.

The elections are being held in five stages mainly to manage the security problems in a proper way. Security agencies will be hard pressed during the entire election process. As a journalist, I have covered many elections and I have been witness to the thankless job the police and para military forces do during polls. Aren't we fully aware of the violence during elections and the blood booth capturing that goes on routinely in certain pockets.

Cricket has become terrorists' target and the lives of our cricket stars is very important for all cricket  fans.  With cricket enjoying following next only to religion, we cannot afford to take chances. Chidambaram is right. The lives of hundreds and thousands of cricket fans, apart from those of cricketers themselves, will be put to risk if the matches are held without proper security.

Even TRPs will take a hit during the elections since the entire nation will be watching the election process rather than cricket.
Post Mumbai attacks, there has been an increased awareness on the right to Vote. Everybody is heard saying - Vote You Must! This being the largest such exercise in the largest democracy, cricket can take a back seat, at least for a while.

Am too closely associated with IPL in their creative work functioning and this strong review of Mr. Srinivasan to me looks just the one side of the coin.
IPL was successful not just in changing many lives, infusing a fresh enthusiasm in our players but also it gave work to so many agencies, consultants and people associated with this country’s one of the biggest events ever held.

From the agency business perspective if you ponder on it, in such difficult times of economic downturn, wherein the advertisers market has completely dried, at least IPl came to all as a reviving and good news because most of the big spending companies have cut down drastically their yearly advertising budgets only to keep safe some special allocations to be spent on advertising during IPL for their brand building exercises. Which is a good news.

It’s one of the case that elections are coinciding with the IPL dates and being security of the nation too a priority, it’s the time when our government needs to play a  vital role in providing a viable solution to it instead of treating these two events as options to each other in isolation.

Difficult situations requires handling and providing solutions in an appropriate way. Shying away from the problems is not always the right strategy. I hope our government would show some good management skills this time !!

Dear Mr Srinivasan,

Im saddened to see your view on this matter. As a representative of one of IPL Franchises, I think its an incorrect position to take.

dear friends

It is a sad event that Srilankan cricketers were targetted by Pak terrorists.  When India is going to face the world's biggest democratic exercise, i.e. General Elections during April and May, IPL is not willing to postpone the matches, inspite of the request from the Union Home Minister.

Already, more than 21 lakhs of security forces like police, para military forces are going to be drawn by Election Commission.  This is in addition to the security arrangements involving many lakhs of police forces during the Election Campaign, throughout India.

In addition, the Government has the responsibility of maintaining the law and order and securing the borders during this strainful days.

I donot know why IPL is particular about going ahead with the matches.  If they plan the matches, then the Governments have to provide more protection to the matches also, deploying heavy security personnel.

In these days when India is facing acute risk of terrorism, a common man does not understand why IPL should be greedy to earn crores and crores   of money, putting other billion innocent citizens to risk.  Every body knows, that General Elections would be held in April and May.  IPL should have planned well in advance, avoiding these two months.

There is a limit for greediness.  Our enthusiam to watch the cricket, should not put the entire Nation to risk.   Nation's security is supreme than few billionaires earning further billions.
