[prpoint] Interesting facts about Podcasts - Current trends - Indian experience

Dear Mr Srinivasan,

It is amazing. Where from you get this sort of energy and commitment to do all these things? One should not only be jealous about you but feel zealous too.

Social Media especially youtube, podcasting, blogs & facebooks may, in the coming years, revolutionise the communication flow giving opportunity to the reader/listener/viewer to respond/report/ventilate ideas. Social Media shall however be in consonance with Social Responsibility.

As a part of social media, the cell phone is a step ahead. Described as 7th Medium, it is affordable and easily manageable by any body. It is a pen, a pad, an eye, an ear, a mouth, a phone, a fax, a calculator, an organiser, a computer, and a hand granade as well. It is estimated that in 2008, there were 4,100 million mobile cellphone subscribers in the world. If used properly it can reform the societies around the world. If abused, it turns out to be dangerous.

Let me quote two examples

1. Recently, a certain secretary to a certain minister in AP, indulged in some romance with a job seeker, in the premises of Secretariat. He has videographed his own acts with his cell phone to view them again and again. The certain secretary lost his very mobile phone to see all his nocturnal acts in the Main line media which resulted in losing his job.

2. Very recently, a senior officer of State Govt, who is in the habit of shuffling his two sim cards quite frequently in order to avoid calls from higher ups or to evade disturbing calls from public is placed under suspension by Election Commission. He is drafted for 2nd phase of Election duty as an observer of violations of Election code. When authorities of election commission wanted to reach him, he is unreachable for a quite long time in the process.

Both have wrongly handled the latest ICT gadget, the socialist medium, the Cell phone. Alas !  'avoidable communication' and 'avoiding communication' can be fatal, at times.

Regards,

Y. Babji

In September 2008, I had circulated the podcasting statistics, based on my own experience in the following link

http://finance. groups.yahoo. com/group/ prpoint/message/ 3345

I started podcasting in July 2006.  I first started using Podbazaar from July 2006.  Then I also started using YouTube (since Sep 2006) and Blip.tv (since March 2007).  Though I am using Odeo and other few sites, I am not taking them into account now for analysis.

Total downloads from July 06 to 19th April 2009 (today)

Podbazaar  -  122 podcasts - 56,381 downloads (only audio)
Blip.tv         -    72 podcasts -  42,679  (both audio and visual)
YouTube    -    21 podcasts -  38845  (only visual)

Total          -   215 podcasts - 1,37,905 downloads

What are the Podcasts preferred by listners
?

PodUniversal publishes only serious podcasts, which can be listened any time.  We publish podcasts on all subjects.  Please see how the listners preferred the categories.

Religion and spiritual :
17 podcasts - 37357 downloads - 27.1% of total downloads

Dr Kalam and connected with him directly or indirectly:
26 podcasts - 36470 downloads - 26.4% of the downloads

All others
172 podcasts - 64078 downloads - 46.5% of downloads

Podcast download (listening) trends from 2006
- Average downloads per month

(based on my podbazaar statistics.  Blip.tv and youtube are not providing such analytical statistics.  Hence, not able to include.  Definitely, the average should be more than what I have given below)

2006  - 314 downloads/month
2007 -  400 downloads/month
2008 -  1930 downloads/month
2009 - 7380 downloads/month (till today)

My Findings based on my personal experience

1.  Spritual podcasts and podcasts relating to Dr Kalam or connected with him together attract more listners.  We also observed the same thing in our earlier study circulated in Sep 2008.

2,  Podcast listening has grown nearly 25 times over 2006 or 3.5 times over 2008.

4.  Indians too have started listening to podcasts, as our podcasts are more India centric.

5.  With the introduction of broadbands, 3G, the podcasts are likely to be preferred in the coming one or two years.  My expectation is that listenership will grow more than 5 times in 2010 over 2009.

I circulate this information for the benefit of our members.  They can plan suitably the use of social media like blogs and podcasts for promoting their products and services.  I invite views from members.
