Dear Srinivasan,
It is indeed very wrong on the part of a journalist to have done that.
But let me tell you that more such incidents or similar ones will
happen. People are getting vexed. They are disappointed. Read the
latest issue of ECONOMIST. Rich people are being attacked all over the
world..
While we should condemn such actions, we must be aware that people are
getting disgusted. Politicians will be targetted. May not be chappals,
but something else.
A need is fast developing to totally ban ALL expenditure by parties or
persons standing for election.
Long ago, I had suggested that the Govt should spend the money, by
deciding against ANY kind of expense. We do not have to follow USA for
spending.
This would call for a major change in the thinking of the political
parties. It is possible and the time has come to find ways to do that.
The difference between the super rich, rich and the AAM ADMI is widening.
I would suggest the follwoing. Actually i am reiterating what I worte
about over a decade ago. When I say that, I make no claim to be a
visionary or Seer.
1. No political party or the candidate will spend money on printing
ANY advertsing material, such as Posters, banners, festoons, digital
material, or any kind of advertsing, including wall writing, erection
of pictures etc.
2. A place and time will be given to each candidate to speak for a
fixed time in his/her constituency, in one common meeting platform
specially set by the Election comission. NO OTHER PLACE WILL BE
ALLOWED TO BE USED.
3.Distribution of handbills, booklets, photos, or any other publicity
material to promote the candidate or party will be banned.
4. Fixed time will be given to each candidate on all national
channels, Radio, TV, etc. No private Channel will be allowed to
broadcast or promote any cadidate or party. Private channels will be
prohibitted from forecasting, by resorting any type of image building
activity of any candidate or a politcal party.
5. Any candidate who is found to flout any of the above will be
immediately disqualified. The decision will be that of the CEC. If
more than one candidate is found to resort to such activity and found
guilty, the party will be banned for that election that was being
conducted.
The above may sound like very harsh; In our country only punishable
actions will yield results.
I am just sharing my opinion for what it is worth.
