[prpoint] ezine on journalism

I made it a point to read this edition of ezine. It was great to get such a cross section of views on the profession. I still feel many  questions remain unanswered as we still don't have a structured  format to define what the role of a reporter/ sub-editor is. The sudden explosion of TV medium has added a lot on the glamour  quotient rather than focus on what a journalist must really do. I would like to recall a conversation that I had with Mr M V Kamat at Manipal, where I had gone to deliver a guest lecture on sports journalism and Mr Kamat was there to generally blast the students for their lack of dedication and purpose. Mr Kamat raised a relevant point of coming up with some study material (not necessarily) a full fledged text book on various aspects of journalism vis-a-vis crime reporting, sports reporting, business reporting, film criticism, political writing, sub-editing and so on. I think that vacuum still needs to be filled as it won't make any point referring to foreign authors in the Indian context.
THE BASIC NEED FOR A JOURNALIST, ACCORDING TO ME, IS THE ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE WELL USING LANGUAGE AS A TOOL.
