Re: [ gfpr ] Re: [prpoint] Thirukkural and Thiruvalluvar on communication

Moderator's note

Dear friends,

The following is from Dr CVNR

Dear Mr. Srinivasan garu,

Congratulations for your innovative post on Communication, the life-blood of Public Relations. Teachings of Tiruvalluvar on both personal communication and keeping distance with CEO are worth emulation by our PR Managers.

India has been the birth place of human speech according to Mark Twain. If it is so, India is also the birth place of Communication and PR. Lord Buddha is the forerunner of today's Global Communication by spreading Buddhism in the East. He is the LIGHT OF ASIA,

Speech is the essential characteristic of PR to influence or change attitudes of public towards corporate goals, services and products.
In the Kural on Speech, Tiruvalluvar says "Sweet speech that comes from love is free from deceit and is the word of mouth of virtuous.
Humility and sweetness of speech are the ornaments of a man.  To say disagreeable things when agreeable are at hand is like eating unripe fruit when there is ripe one.  Let PR managers adopt this as a tool in our speeches.

With kind regards,

Public Relationsly yours,

 Dear All
Chapter 2 and Chapter 4 of "Gita"  are invariably quoted by most of the Indian soft skill trainers in their management talks in schools, colleges and other training institutes. Dos & Don'ts of  life are explained in 'Thirukkural'. They are also equally important for moral values and ethics. Even modern day 'god men' quote these in their discourse.

Lord Rama and Lord Krishna are quoted as examples of Efficient ruler and Effective ruler respectively.
While lord Rama's efficiency in handling difficult situations tactfully upholding righteousness are widely explained in  Ramayana; Lord Krishna's effectively handling the situations are highlighted in Mahabharata.

Lord Krishna would have handled the characters like Manthra or the Washer-man who was responsible for Sita being sent to forest, in a different way. In Mahabharata, several examples of  Lord Krishna very effectively handling  situations  and characters like Arjuna. Yudhister, Karna, Sishupal and many others are narrated at length.
Modern day 'Managers' including PRP's can surely apply these principles in today's world.

Dear sirs,

Every ancient scripture including Ramayana & Mahabharata have several examples of application of management principles like focus on the target and achieving it finally. PR is the outcome of Management. These principles have all along been used by management gurus and adopted by PR pundits world over.

For example Rama inquires about the Kingdom of Bharatha when the latter visited Rama in the Forests.  It includes the Governance, Management of Military forces, Welfare measures undertaken, Priorities to weak, Kindness meted out towards suppressed, disabled and old, Gathering of information.

Dear  Srini

Here is the extract of the Management principles derived from Bhagavad Gita.

 'BHAGAVAD GITA AND MANAGEMENT'

It is a revelation to learn that Gita is Inter-twined in the principles of Management.

Bhagavad Gita is essentially an eternal spring for man's upliftment, bringing in the relevance of duty and accomplishment to one's goal in life.  The metamorphosing of Arjuna as a Karma Yogi by Srikrishna, I believe, can be a great guiding factor to the development of Management principles.

It is interesting to note that the Bhagavad Gita has all the Management processes such as direction, coordination, motivation and leadership and clearly delineates the ways for attaining one's true potential through spiritual efficiency.

Management is nothing but a convergence of action and wisdom .

In today's changing times it is critical to have an energised work environment for the growing prosperity of one and all.  Managerial effectiveness and individual efficiency can be achieved only when our young Managers become Karmic Warriors in a world of entrepreneurship.

The application of traditional Management concepts in solving Modern Management problems is the need of the day.  And again as communication is the life blood of any organisation, the empathic communication that Srikrishna had with Arjuna on the battlefield is of great signifance in the management of organizations.

Communication as it stands today is the art of getting across one's ideas effectively for a greater cause and there can be no better treasure house than Bhagavad Gita in bringing this to the fore.

Bhagavad Gita in its 700 verses and 18 chapters has clearly spelt out the modalities on good health and better living; equilibrium of mind and productivity.

young Managers would do well to adhere to these divinely principles so that they are mentally strong and oriented towards the direction of self-fulfilment through spiritual energy and conduct.

Efficiency in action is the yoga according to Bhagavad Gita.  As continuous action and goal directed activities are the principles of Management, Bhagavad Gita is the perfect commandment to foster this efficiency for maximum productivity.  This yogic practice besides providing good health, will result in a stable mind, sharp intellect and super consciousness as you have aptly put it, all required to make India a great nation than ever before.

India is fast becoming a human resource capital of the world.  Global outsourcing has come to play a big part in our country's fortunes today and the opportunity can be encashed only by creating a honed workforce discrenable to the world.

In today's competitive world we need self-motivated entrepreneurs who can think out-of-the-box on concepts and ideas that are acceptable on a global scale.   Corporate Managers too have to work like entrepreneurs, so that they can come out of the cocoon and usher in newer thoughts.  It is here that I feel that Bhagavad Gita will be of great importance as it is a book on self-Management talking about every facet of effective Management.

The effective Manager should act like Arjuna who chose Srikrishna's wisdom for his support, unlike Duryodhana who chose Srikrishna's army.

Again Bhagavad Gita is full of advice on the theory of cause and effect, making the doer responsible for the consequences of his deeds.  Thus the best means of effective performance is the work itself.  Attaining this state of mind called 'Nishkama Karma' is the right attitude to work, because it prevents the ego, the mind from dissipation of attention through speculation on future gains or losses.

The great poet Rabindranath Tagore, says working for love is freedom in action.  A concept which is described as 'disinterested work' in the Gita.

'Disinterested work' finds expression in devotion, surrender and equipoise.  Detached involvement in work is the key to mental equanimity or the state of 'Nirdwanda'.  Such de-personified intelligence is best suited for those who sincerely believe in the supremacy of organisational goals as compared to narrow personal success and achievement.

By making the equable mind the bed-rock of all actions, the Gita evolved the goal of verification of work ethic with ethics in work, for without ethical process, no mind can attain equipoise. The Guru, Adisankara says that the skill necessary in the performance of one's duty is that of maintaining an evenness of mind in the face of success or failure.  Thus while commonplace theories of motivation may be said to lead us to the bondage of extrinsic rewards, the Gita's principles leads us to the intrinsic rewards of mental and indeed moral satisfaction.

Managerial excellence in social organisations can be achieved only through improving the quality of people, products and services.  This can be achieved by following the behavioral approach adopted in the Bhagavad Gita where Srikrishna brought out the leadership qualities of Arjuna by changing his negative attitudes towards his duties.  The motivation and the devotion to duty is today an internationally accepted concept and this value orientation has become a virtue.

Bhagavad Gita as a Management tool can be a potent weapon if its nuances are understood and followed to perfection

dear shri narasimha reddi garu and others

You have raised a very very pertinent topic in the group.

Presently, globally we consider twitter as the greatest short form of communication with 140 characters.  The whole world got excited over this short form of communication and we coined a new word 'tweet' for such short forms.

What many of us are not aware is that every Thirukkural has only 7 words, with 25 to 35 characters maximum. 'Kural' is the exact tamil meaning of Twitter.  Thiru (meaning Sri) was added to Kural, to make it Thirukural.   That means Thiruvalluvar was able to communicate at one-fourth of twitter permitted characters, that too without shortening the words.  (eg.now  for is being written as 4; to is written as 2 ).  Thirukkural was written two thousand years back.

Dr Abdul Kalam is fond of Thirukkural and wherever he goes and speaks, he picks up the concept and thread from Thirukkural.  Whenever, I take sessions on management or communication, i always quote from Thirukkural.

Even after sixty years of Independence, we always have a fancy of accepting the quotes from Europeans and other foreigners.  The concepts which are relevant for modern days were told by our Indian Gurus like Thiruvalluvar, Chanakya, Vidhura, Manu, Bhishma, Lord Krishna thousands of years back.

Probably, due to lack of proper interpretation by us, connecting the modern management principles, they are being ignored.  Time has come now that forums like this and experts explore the great management and communication principles from our ancient Gurus.

As suggested by Dr Reddi garu, I will pick up few Thirukkurals and explain them to suit modern day management.  I will work out and communicate in a day or two.

Thanks Reddi garu for your suggestion.  I also appeal to others who have knowledge in other great works of different Gurus like Chanakya can  contact me.  We can work out a good model to explore them.

In Mahabarata, Bhishma gives some advises to Yudhishtra lying on his arrow bed in the war field. I do not know Sanskrit.  I got it few of them explained through some scholars.  Though they contain the advises to a King, it is relevant for a CEO in a corporate of modern days.

If some one can explore, that will be a great handbook for youngsters.

Thirukkural is one of the books translated into many number of languages, probably next to Bible.  English translation is available in all leading book stores in all cities.

Please share your views.
