The handling (mis-handling) of the post rape scenario by the government presents a case study in crisis communication.
The communication gap between the government at various levels has led to the massive outrage and subsequent infiltration of rowdy elements bringing a bad name to the peaceful protest.
I suggest we seriously debate all aspects of crisis communication and what the authorities could and should have done.
If I were to handle PR for government, I would have reacted fast to the public agitation and recommended to the PM to go on air immediately.
I would have recommended to The President, AICC to issue media statements on their, meetings with the student groups.
The government could have said: All medical expenses at the hospital and the follow-up care would be met through the Prime Minister's relief Fund.
I would have asked for an emergency meeting with all editors - broadcast and print – and announced a series of measures to take stringent measures to check crimes against women. The Justice Verma Committee was one such measure that could have been announced at least three days before it was actually announced.
I would have recommended total transparency in whatever the government was doing.
Finally, an all-India CM's and Chief Secretaries' meet to discuss measures to check crimes against women could have been planned.
Based on the suggestions, suggest we come out with a blueprint for crisis communication which will help all of us and the upcoming PR professionals.
Do not forget to add a point or two on the restraint to be observed in the media race for TRPs!
