Subject: [prpoint] ICICI Bank official demands Tata Group to probe the death of Charudatta Deshpande
hi all
The recent suicide of Charudatta Deshpande, a journalist turned
corpcom professional has triggered a controversy. Now, ICICI Bank
demands Tata Group to probe into the matter and also offers to provide
employment to Charu's son. .
Is ICICI Bank doing PR using the sad moment? Or Is Tata Steel really
guilty of harassing Charu to push him to commit suicide?.

HR professional Ramkumar asks Tatas to probe death of Charudatta Deshpande
MUMBAI: Three days after Charudatta Deshpande, Tata Steel's former
corporate affairs and communications head, committed suicide at his
house in Vasai, Mumbai, K Ramkumar, an executive director of ICICI
Bank, has written to Ratan Tata, Cyrus Mistry and Krishna Kumar
expressing shock over the manner in which Tata Steel had behaved with
Deshpande. He has also urged for a probe into the circumstances
surrounding Deshpande's death.
In an email sent on Sunday, Ramkumar, a well-known HR professional,
writing in his personal capacity alleges that Tata Steel terminated
Deshpande's services in a "disgraceful manner". The mail, quoting
people who had met Deshpande in the past four weeks, alleges that the
late corporate affairs head was under "untold pressure and threat at
Jamshedpur" in the weeks preceding his death.
Responding to questions from this paper, Tata Group chief ethics
officer Mukund Rajan, in an email response, said the group is taking
the allegations raised in Ramkumar's letter seriously. "We will
establish an appropriate process to ascertain the facts and take
action accordingly. No Tata company would condone or authorise any
action or behaviour as suggested in the same," he said.
"Charudatta Deshpande was a loved and respected former colleague. We
are shocked and distressed by his passing away. Our thoughts are with
his family at this difficult time," he added.
Ramkumar's letter, referring to the claims of the people who met
Deshpande in the four weeks preceding his death, alleges that he was
"confined" for over two weeks at Jamshedpur.
"I have made no allegations in my letter," Ramkumar told ET. "I
believe the Tatas are an upright organisation and they will probe the
death of Charudatta Deshpande and bring it to a proper closure."
"We also categorically deny any action by the company concerned and/
or its partners to sully the name of the deceased," Rajan said,
responding to a claim by Ramkumar that a PR agency had attempted to
"sully" Deshpande's name after his death.
On Monday, senior Tata Group representatives visited Deshpande's
family to pay their respects. ICICI Bank has also organised a job at
the bank for Deshpande's son who graduates from an engineering college
in two weeks.
Ramkumar has also raised the issue with many other senior managers and
HR heads across India Inc, including the past and present HR heads of
the Tata Group, Satish Pradhan and NS Rajan, respectively. He has also
taken up the issue with senior representatives of Aditya Birla Group,
Mahindra & Mahindra, HUL, IBM, RPG, among others.
Former chairman of Hindustan Unilever Keki Dadiseth too has been approached.
Deshpande, 58, a former journalist-turned-PR professional, worked in
The Economic Times in the 1990s in the political bureau and later went
on to work with ICICI Bank, the Mahindra Group and Tata Steel. He was
to join a leading public relations firm this month.
ET spoke to Ramkumar's HR colleagues and they acknowledged having
heard from him on this issue. "I have received the letter and will
write to Cyrus Mistry with my cover note. This is a matter that
deserves his attention," a senior official, also a board member in
many Indian corporates, said on condition of anonymity
