Re: [prpoint] Re: Modi's Himalayan Miracle - Fact Vs Fiction

The debate seems to have warmed up now. And why should it end at this juncture?

I liked this debate. Most probably, the BJP/Modi through their sources put the story out unofficially, the Goebbels line, put it out, test it, see, how people react. If it works, you are great. If it boomerangs, just deny it etc. Funny thing was something else. I get five newspapers at my house. The TOI group was funny. TOI's Abheek Burman wrote that strong anti-Modi piece. The same day, Madhu Kishwar, a woman for whom I have had great respect till now.. who also did good work for delhi's rickshaw pullers with her Manushi NGO, supported Modi's Rambo act solidly in Economic Times. Then the next day, Rajnath Singh says, Modi never said it. Kishwar just lost face...

But one lesson here. PR / Media guys should be careful of the Modi spin. There would be more of it till 2014. Before his last election in Gujarat, Modi wrote this letter to PM Manmohan Singh, then leaked it, saying India should not hand over Sir Creek to Pakistan, which PM termed 'mischievous'. Modi likes this... to put a spin to things. Thats the only way he survives. But it is my hunch, he is not going to have much sway over large swathes of the rural populace. So, I wonder what next the BJP/NaMo brigade will do? In 2013/2014, there isn't any temple/mosque breaking frenzy... and India has moved on in quite a few ways in the last twenty years.

Hi Tushar,

Some of BNKs initial questions certainly require answers both from PR fraternity and media friends. Good to see an official statement from Apco.

However, only one part of the story seems to have been clarified by Apco which is the so called  'Himalayan Miracle' related facts. What about other facts reported in the story? If they were factually incorrect too, I feel, it would have been better if other allegations like working for (a) dictators of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbaev, the governments of Malaysia and Israel and (2)the American tobacco lobby as mentioned in the TOI story had also been refuted so that doubts as whether the journalist was selectively incorrect with his facts or was fully with all the facts in the story could have been addressed as well.

Also, whenever a clarification statement is issued by any company voluntarily, I think requesting for anonymity and masking the identity of a 'spokesperson' who seems to have shared substantial critical information is a not good way to clarifying especially in matters as controversial as these.

Would request member's views as well.

Jhon

Agreed, Jagannathan.

Also, this clearly means APCO was not involved at all. This put forwards a huge question mark on another messenger from the same media house Mr. Abheek Barman's quality of journalism, who doesn't check facts either.

Take care, guys.

Does that mean the messenger will not verify the background? or will he not abide by the ethics of journalism?

Dear friends

After going through the  observations of Messrs. Acharya Babji, Xvier Prabhu, Narendra, Kharvi and other friends I feel that the story of Modi's Himalayan miracle is a concocted one. This type of journalism is dangerous and will not guide the people or nation in a good path/faith. Some how a systematic 'pull down' of Narendra Modi in any way possible a strategy seems being made out. Whether it does harm or good I am of the opinion that in the process it appears that  many misdeeds of his opponents ,which may perhaps be harmful to the nation, are being hushed up behind the national screen. Journalism or journalists should not succumb to these since with such hype journalism the very journalism will become tarnished in the coming days not to speak of PR too in this regard.

NaMo's Herculean [Himalayan] Task ! Fact or Fiction, a very interesting read.
This is the reason why Journalism is called "History in haste" and PR is still doubted as "Spin".

The so-called Himalayan Miracle done  by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has attracted national attention with politicians jumping head over heels to either praise or criticise the Rambo act.
Today’s edition of The Times of India has an excellent edit page piece by Abeek Barman who analyses the entire drama which ultimately turns out to be a piece of fiction spinned  Modi’s PR network.
The act itself, the media reportage and the way the PR machinery functioned raises many points to ponder over for us, PR and media professionals.
  1. Is it ethical for PR professionals to exaggerate facts into such dramatic stories?
  2. Does media not have the responsibility to cross check any PR item fed to them?
  3. Does this episode teach us few lessons?
  4. Does this impact the credibility of PR and media as well?
  5. Do we not have collective responsibility to our readers and viewers?
Friends, let us discuss this in a frank and democratic manner so that the future generations will not ask us: Where were you when your professionals were committing Himalayan blunders?
As Abeek says: In every area the Modi narrative is a tale of bluster and bluff. But his Himalayan miracle is a barefaced, cynical lie.
Hope many of you have already read Abeek’s piece. I am pasting it here for reference The highlights are mine:
Also, pl check the original story on Modi's Rambo act: Narendra Modi lands in Uttarakhand, flies out with 15,000 Gujaratis

On the evening of Friday, June 21, as India reeled from the shock of the calamity in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi landed up in Dehradun with a handful of officers. By Sunday, it was claimed that he had rescued 15,000 stranded Gujaratis from the wreckage of Uttarakhand and sent these grateful folks back home.
This miracle was played up in media. But how was this feat achieved in a day or so, when India's entire military establishment has struggled to rescue around 40,000 people over 10 days?
