[prpoint] Bloomberg wins Media football tourney

 

This is a good initiative from the Press Club - other than drinking, we also indulge in thinking and even playing!

Bloomberg emerged champions defeating Mumbai Mirror 4-3 via the tie-breaker in the Press Club Inter-Media football tournament, played at the Mumbai School Sports Association (MSSA) ground, on Saturday.

Despite the unbearable heat, sixteen team’s rugged shoulders, lots of cheering, penalty shoot-outs and nail-biting finishes reached a crescendo in a final clash in the evening between Bloomberg and Mumbai Mirror, says the Secretary of the Press Club in a cmmunique.

In a keen battle for supremacy, Mumbai Mirror took the lead through Pulasta Dhar’s first half goal. However, Bloomberg fought back and after a missing a couple of chances managed to score a late equaliser through their consistent scorer Kartik Palaniappan to force the match into the penalty shootout.

In the ensuing tie-breaker, Palaniappan, Nishit Karkera and Joel Pannikot successfully converted for Bloomberg while only Dhar and Vivek Ajinkya managed to score for the losers.

Rev. Fr. Jude Rodrigues, President, MSSA, awarded the handsome winners’ trophy and individual medals, to the Bloomberg players, who also received gift vouchers. Mumbai Mirror received the runners-up trophy and medals from Sebastian Fernandes, Hon. Gen. Secretary, MSSA and gift vouchers. The medals and trophies were presented by MSSA.

Earlier Mid-Day defeated Indian Express 3-0 in the third place match.

In the semi-finals, Bloomberg powered by Palaniappan’s two goals overcame Indian Express 2-0, while Mumbai Mirror defeated Mid-Day 8-0. Dhar scored four, while Ajinkya and Duane Fonseca netted two each.

Organised by the Press Club, Mumbai in association with Adfactors Group and Mumbai Sports School Association, the five-a-side football encounter elicited a huge response from various teams and their supporters. Some of the teams that participated in the knock-out tournament include Hindustan Times, Afternoon, Kerala Media, Asian Age, Bombay News Photographers Association, Deccan Chronicle and Press Club. This tournament was co-ordinated by Gordon D’Costa and Amit Shah. 

Results, At Mumbai School Sports Association (MSSA) ground – Semi-finals: Bloomberg 2 (Kartik Palaniappan 2) beat Indian Express 0; Mumbai Mirror 8 (Pulasta Dhar 4, Vivek Ajinkya 2, Duane Fonseca 2) beat Mid-Day 0.

Final: Bloomberg 4 (Kartik Palaniappan 2, Nishant Karkera, Joel Pannikot) beat Mumbai Mirror 3 (Pulasta Dhar 2, Vivek Ajinkya).

Third Place: Mid-Day beat Indian Express 3-0
