M.Sc. (Science Communication)

 Introduction

With an initiative of the National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC), Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, the Department of Media Sciences of Anna University Chennai offers a two-year Master of Science (M.Sc.) programme in Science Communication from the academic year 2008-09.

Communicators are the makers of the modern world. As an effective mediatory between scientists and people, communicators play a vital role in throwing light on the inventions of the scientists to the common people. Without communicators the knowledge will remain the exclusive preserve of a handful of intellectuals.

Unfortunately, science communication is in its infancy in India. Newspapers and other media organizations seldom have a science desk. A reporter who attends a political meeting may also attend a science conference. When he/she interviews a scientist the gap between them is so wide that the reporter gets only a little out of the interviews. More so, science and technology organizations – be it research laboratories or corporate companies – need expertise in disseminating their findings / technical information in the form of reports, video documentation, articles, press releases, etc. A good number of outsourced jobs such as technical editing and corporate e-learning involve communicating science in simple English. Science communicators serve as an interface between science and communication.

Funding

The National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC) has come forward to technically and financially support M.Sc. (Science Communication) for the first two batches. Although the programme is started on a self-supporting mode, all students shall be paid a monthly stipend of Rs. 1,000.
