Actually what is happening is that the gender bias as well as gender preference is being used by everyone to suit their convenience. Though all of us would like to believe that all are equal, the reality is somewhat different. We see a lot of glamourous gals in the hospitality industry, customer care centres, etc. in higher proportion that the guys in the same position. Perhaps the biggest paradox is visible in the kitchen staff of star hotels. Across the world, we find male head-chefs and very few female head-chefs, with Madhur Jaffery being the sole exception. Such exceptions are visible in other industries also.
But I find the whole debate of whether who is suited best for a particular occupation rather silly as the whole issue is solely based on the individual capabilities. How can one explain the emergence of fiery Fiona of HP or Indra Nooyi of Pepsi?? How could they reach the top?? It is simply because of their sheer perseverance and individual capabilities. We are yet to hear a woman heading the military anywhere in the world, though there are a lot of woman cadets.
Moving slightly away from the issue - the choice of John McCain's running VP mate, Palin is a raging debate in the US elections. Many believe that it is because of the glamourous quotient of Sarah Palin vis-a-vis the ageing presedential candidate and also to counter attack the huge popularity of Barrak Obama.
Now we can debate how a young woman VP with very little powers or role in a US congress can uplift McCain's chances over Obama.
