there is a different perspective and one that is a dangerous precedent being set here.
the decision to hire and fire is an invoilable and fundamental right of the management of a private for profit organization and that is a foundation that allows the management to take the responsibility of piloting the ship. any external interference or emotional baggage bringing to this is really harmful and that is what is happening. one may this is extraordinary times but knowing our politicians well once they know they can meddle they will irrespective of the times.
the other is criticizing companies for being insensitive or being purse driven. a very invalid point which considers today's consumers or employees to be angels. which they definitely are not. the truth is many of today's consumers are selfish, self centered and are money driven themselves. will give you many examples. most of the corporate frauds are perpetrated by employees. most pilferage of company resources are by employees. most employees utilize the company's resources for internet access, chatting and printing (a leading company saved 5 crores in stationary in a year - tat is the scale of misuse). will give even more glaring examples. many air india employees took voluntary retirement and joined private airlines at hefty salaries. but they still continue to get pension from the airline and also utilize the free tickets of the airline for them and their families. abrasive it may sound, it is being justified. and is being fought as a fundamental right. when the company is making huge losses.
my point is simple. today's consumers or employees are not puritans. they are equally ruthless, often unethical and unreliable.
this mass frenzy and sympathy of the employee/customer as a david is a age old emotional trap and so is companies as ruthless goaliths.
the needle needs to sit right in the middle. both companies and individuals need to be dealth with equally fairly and with equal objectiveness. no sparing the customer or the employee who is unethical.nor companies should be spared when they dont adhere to laws and principles.
as a CEO, will not run a company if the decision to hire and fire is not mine and that of my board. there is no ifs and buts to this good times or bad times. or we should have only NGOs and public enterprises. by the way the only acountable enterprise in today's world is a private company not governments not NGOs and not public sector enterprises.

xavier

Subject: Re: [prpoint] Image crisis - Knee jerk action of Jet Airways - A good case study for brand/PR Managers..
(Moderator's Note: For the benefit of new members - The author of the mail was the Chief Spokesman of the Govt. of India for 7 years and was also the Information Advisor to Indian Prime Ministers)
Jet Boss came under pressure from Civil Aviation Minister who wants the Govt to give a bail out to his friends in aviation. This is the impression the whole event creates. Even while he was trying to give Rs5000/- crore relief from Govt either as aviation fuel tax relief or as interest free loan, the pink slips from Jet to employees caused loss of good will in Govt and hence,, bail out became unsaleable to policy makers. Mr Goyal tried to bail out the civil aviation minister by cancelling the pink slips.
Alternative strategy should have effected across the board cut in salaries of top management and down the line, even while retaining the sacked employees.
There is a great story of PR in economic slump. Silicon graphics was about to go under. it got eminent newmen to head its PR dept. Introduced a very transparent online communication bearing all company details. every one took massive salary cuts and no one was sacked. All turn around decisions were put online and employees consulted. Within 3 years the company changed its fortunes.
Mr Malya of KF splurged on Formula One and IP Land rebranding Deccan. Each airline expanded in the same way their egos expanded. Hired mindlessly. Now they cannot complain.
How can ordinary people accept tax exemption on aviation fuel when they are paying for ordinary diesel and petrol a high price? The Govt naturally is averse to cutting such taxes. esp in an election year.

Dear Srinivasan,
A few years back JET AIRWAYS was hailed as a TOP brand in India and won many awards for its excellent service.
It continues to be the favourite domestic airlines for many of us. It can legitimately claim of having a team of charming and well groomed in flight attendents, and courteous and efficient service personnel at all levels.
However, the "BOSS" Mr. Goyal, single handedly demolished the edifice by his inane actions in the past two days.He has scaled new heights of naivete by swearing on his dead mother when he claimed that he was not influenced by any political leader, when he took back the sacked staff of jet airways..(the whole world knows that what pressure was mounted by Praful patel and Raj Thakaray on him...?)
The moral of the story seems to be that it takes one man to destroy the image of an organisation, and when it happens to be your own chairman.. it is done all the more easier..!
