Re: [prpoint] Mumbai attack - What should be the role of communication professionals?

Dear all,

It is indeed high time that Managers  as a whole and PR Managers in particular think of reaching out to people on the mayhem and avoidance of mayhem. More than this, the Government and the power to be also need to be educated in recasting their thinking.

For e.g., that Government failed in its duty is very clear, not just in the general scenario of the attacks but I can cite three specific points in this regard:

1. Times of India points out that the warnings by fishermen were grossly ignored. This is nothing but a clear proof of the lackadaisical attitude on the part of our  authorities

2. The Black Cats had to sit idle for more than 4 hours, thanks to administrative squabbles. This is wrong signal not only to the Army but to the world that we not only lack Intelligence to prevent terrorist attacks but in fact, lack proper mechanism and much needed fire fighting management leadership even during the hours of grave crisis

3. There is a criticism that the rescue operations were more concentrated to save few foreigners than to save more number of Indians. This is rather appalling, if true. Not surprisingly, the number of Indians died are more than the number of foreigners died in the event.

We had been long brought up on the ideal lessons of tolerance and patience, unity and peace. But is it not time to show those who are responsible for terrorism to be taught a tight lesson? It could have been some of us who could have got captured in the mayhem and lost our lives, terrorism could touch us all ,if not today, certainly tomorrow.

The PR exercise should concentrate on teaching the masses to raise against the terrorists rather than preaching peace, unity and tolerance at hours such as these.

regards,

Kishore patnaik
