Re: [prpoint] Obama and his extensive use of social media and podcasts

Hi there,

I fully endorse your views. The younger generation has neither time to listen to loooong speeches, or  lenghty a/vs.  This reminds me of a Tea commercial in which a young  voter is  asking a politican does he knows his job well,  when the vote seeker asks as to what job, the yongster reminds hwen that he as to look after best interest of the country.

If you recall Indira Gandhi's slogan 'Garibi Hatao' had good results on those poor (pun intended)  voters. Though, ultimately, 'Hatao' did not even resulted in' ghatao'.

Dear Sir

As you pointed out, well orchestrated short film with good music and visulas will definately be a big hit in India. Working professionals definatley do not have the time to sit in front of the TV sets to decide on the fate of next government. Innovative use of social media has an edge to garner votes of working professionals and youngsters.

I do not think long speeches will be of great interest with respect to India as youngsters ae the main consumers of social media.

Mobile companies have an opportunity to make quick bucks out of the election as every party will try to use it to the fullest extent possible.

dear friends

The US Presidential Election is an unique one in many ways.  This is the first time, that a candidate used the social media extensively.  I have also mentioned about the power of social media amongst the youth on earlier occassions.  For the first time, in India, Symbiosis has introduced 'social media' as one full paper from this semester onwards for their media and pr students.  I think slowly, social media will be part of academic syllabus in the coming years.

Obama has used  podcasts, blogs and social networking sites very extensively and innovatively.  He was present in all the social media like facebook, linkedin, myspace, youtube, flickr, twitter, to name a few.  He was extensively using podcasts as a medium of communication.

Obama has made 1813 podcasts in youtube which was viewed by 97.3 people.  John McCain made 330 podcasts, which were viewed by 24.8 million people.  John McCain pulled out from the social media and started focussing more on traiditional media.

Besides, Obama used iPhones, iPods and mobiles very innovatively.  Usage of social media has brought him closer with the younger generation.

In my opinion, with large number of mobile phones in India ( more than 300 million) and more than 60 million  internet users, social media and social networking sites will play a significant role (though not like US)  in the coming Parlimanent Elections of India.  I request members to share their views.
