Dear friends,
I need your help to help ourselves in an important matter of concern to all of us. As the voices raise to repeat ENOUGH IS ENOUGH and show our disgust about most of our politicians, there is one way we can all demonstrate that we care for democracy, but would like to establish an honest political system which will prevent thugs, greedy self aggrandising corrupt persons with criminal records to get elected in the forthcoming elections for Lok Sabha, be it by the middle of February or April May, as scheduled.
There is a clause in the People Representation Act ( section 49(O)), which gives the opportunity to every politician that ENOUGH IE ENOUGH. many of us who participated in the campaign to make known this clause are continuing to do so. But fear and embarrassment have been two of the causes for lack of knowledge or desire to use this section when we went to vote.
Therefore, four years ago an very committed social activist Sri Sanjay Parikh a leading advocate of Supreme Court filed a PIL praying to the justices to order the Election commission to include one extra button in the Electronic Voting machine which would say NONE OF THE ABOVE. This will the bottom most button which a voter can press if he or she is not satisfied with all the candidates. Many of us vote for some one whom we are not happy about as there is often no choice. By pressing the NONE OF THE ABOVE, button we will all send a message that we do not want any of the candidates to win. Under a formula set forth by the Election commission, if a large number of persons
vote for the NONE OF THE ABOVE, even the winning candidate may not win.
I am not detailing this. But i ask each one of you and ask another 10 or 20 persons you know to write a letter to the Chief Justice of India, Supreme Court, New Delhi, requesting to bring this PIL pending for the past four years and dispose it. We should get a decision from the Supreme court favourably as the Election Commission has also agreed to the suggestion and prayer in the PIL. We don't have much time. therefore please urgently write and make hundreds of others to write the following letter,
Will you please help to save democracy so as to start a cleaner political system? I thank you along with my colleagues & fellow trustees, in the Consumers association of India and The Catalyst Trust for your acceptance of this campaign to help get back our
democracy.
With best wishes,
Yours sincerely,
R.Desikan

Draft letter to be sent to Hon;ble Chief Justice of India, Supreme Court, New Delhi
From:
Date:
Subject: Including 'None of the above' option in the Electronic Voting machines, after listing official candidates
TYPE FOLLOWING LETTER SHOULD WRITTEN OR TYPED ON YOUR LETTER HEAD OR PLAIN PAPER SIGNED AND SENT TO
THE HON'BLE CHIEF JUSTICE OF INDIA,
SUPREME COURT OF IDNA, NEW DELHI.
Dear Hon'ble Cheif justice of India
We would like to bring to your kind notice that a matter of substantial public interest contained in a petition filed before the Honourable Supreme court relating to giving statutory recognition to the voter to reject confidence in all candidates put up by parties and
individuals is pending before the Hon. Court for more than four
years. Our understanding is that the Election Commission of India has
supported the proposal of giving such an option to the voter by
suggesting that the Electronic Voting Machine should include in the
machine after listing names of all officially recognised candidates,a
separate "None of the Above" be listed. The Election Commission
requesting such a change in the ballot proforma under the Rules is
pending with the Union Government for more than five years.
Such a provision will enable the voters to express their
dissatisfaction with the candidates of doubtful integrity or with
criminal background, which will eventually encourage better candidates
being nominated by political parties.
Our request is to take up this case for hearing immediately as the
decision of court is likely to improve the quality of our
representatives in Legislatures especially in the context of impending
General Elections in Apr-May 2009.
Regards
Sincerely
