SIGNIFICANCE OF "NATIONAL PUBLIC RELATIONS EDUCATION DAY"
Like it or Loathe it, Public relations is not only ubiquitous but also an important part of our life. In fact, with Public relations everything succeeds, without public relations nothing succeeds in any field of activity. With the introduction of New Industrial Policy 1991 that envisages economic liberalization, privatization and globalization, Indian public relations became global to meet the competitive marketing environment.
The distinguishing trait of public relations practice in our country may be described as the quantity of personnel rather than the quality of the profession. No doubt, there are a good number of Public Relations professionals in India, who are second to none in the world, but, there are also many non-professionals without education and training in public relations. The fast growing public relations discipline is not supported by professional education. Therefore, National Public Relations Education Day on 6th August every year is being observed all over the Country as to draw the attention of the UGC, Universities, State Councils of Higher Education to introduce PR courses with standard text books.
At the initiative of Prof. K. C. Reddy, Chairman, Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education, an expert committee was constituted to revamp Journalism, Public Relations and Mass Communication Education in our State. The sub-committee which dealt with Public Relations courses and syllabi was headed by Dr CV Narasimha Reddi, a pioneer of Indian Public Relations. Based on the recommendations of this sub-committee, the State Council has issued guidelines to all the Universities in the State to introduce three new public relations courses from this academic year. "They are: (1) B.A. Mass Communication & Public Relations (BA-CPR - three years course); (2) Master of Communication & Journalism with specialization in Public Relations (MCJ - one year Programme); (3) Master of Science in Public Relations (MS-PR - two years Programme). This Public Relations education model could be adopted by UGC for implementation in all the Indian Universities.
Launching of Public Relations courses, preparing model Public Relations syllabus, production of standard PR text books, PR research and induction & in- service training for PR professionals will be highlighted during the National PR Education Day celebration besides honoring PR teachers PR educators & PR students.
