About The Conference : Digital technologies have pervaded the society at large and have profoundly altered the fabric of culture and communication in particular. With the present generation growing amidst a smorgasbord of digital devices, the distinction between public and private space has waned giving rise to the domination of virtual over the real. Implicit in this doxa is the impact of technologies on culture, which is undergoing tremendous change globally.
The digital natives, as the consumers of the new media are called, have gained nuanced understanding of the digital world. Thus, there is a need for a shift in focus from the de facto content producers to the users. A deeper analysis reveals that the new form of digitality allows users producing content – Alvin Toffler name them as prosumers and Alex Bruns identifies the process as produsage.
As McLuhan points out that technologies are extension of human beings, digital media have become extension of ourselves. In this context, it is pertinent to seek answers for the pervasive nature of the digital medium and the participatory culture it affords. How does participation revolutionise content production/consumpt
On the other hand, the predominance of multimodality in digital content calls for inquiring into non-linear reading and traversal between and across textual, oral and video knowledge present in e-learning, wikis, blogs, and news sites.
In addition, television has metamorphosed into an interactive outfit enabling viewers to choose the timing of a program, download video content and experience a range of internet applications culminating in convergence. There is a need to analyse the prime role played by electronic media especially its contribution to human development.
It is in this context, the present national seminar has been organised by the Centre for Electronic Media, Pondicherry University, with an aim to provide a common platform to understand the impact of technology on culture and society from both theoretical and practical perspectives. Experts from academia and industry from all over India will attend the conference and share their discerning and insightful knowledge on various topics.
