Re: [Image_Management] Grooming in PR

Deon Binneman has proposed some steps for Grooming. They are relevant and needs follow up.As I said earlier,'acculturation' that is groomed to reflect the values of an organization. In fact corporate reputation is made from a firm's behaviour towards all stakeholders, and therefore, the new inductee should go through post -induction grooming. In the government foreign service,we used to have a detailed programme module about how you behave while represetning IndiaThat kind of grooming is possible only when the entity has grown.or a profession has grown and built up tradtions and conventions relevant to cliet/public expectations. In Journalism, major newspapers until recently groomed new entrants. In the Hindu newspaper this tradition continues. In AIR news room, until recently they used to groom new entrants.PR in India is yet to be sufficiently corporatized;it is practiced more by one person outfits;few ad agencies have full fledged PR depts. Therefore, shared traditions and conventions ruling behaviours of practioners are rare to come by.
How do we bypass this to design a Groomign prog?S.narendra

S. Narendra has a good point.

This is why I asked earlier what grooming means to you.

We spend a lot of money on corporate identity campaign but do little to affect corporate behavior in our people.

So depending the industry I am working with, I would propose a module called

PR Professionalism

This is what it should cover:

-         Personal Grooming: Style, appearance, dress and behavior

-         Corporate & Personal Behavior – etiquette, actions, street wise tips and protocol

-         Professional Career tips

Dear friends: ON PR person groomign, I have seen amils  form persons from abroad. They are only looking at commercial Ops.Nothiing  wrong with that. When I joined SBI as an officer, the trainign module incldued GROOMING.That wa sbecasue the Imperial bank traditons continued for a while in SBI.IN IAS Trg,we went rhough GROOMING at NA Admn.IIMC in its inception GROOMED.I benefitted form this. But no more.
Finishing schools thrive in Swtizerland that groom models.Every profession needs GROOMING.That is acculturation process or baptism,if you like.Mere academics or scholastics donot GROOM.Body languqage, style, professional manners (etiqutte) to get below the skin of the Clinet/make first impresions important. We represetna profession.Therefoe, how we carry the flag is improtant. It is not necessarily wearing a Tie/Suit.Youc an wear a Kurta.Dhoti.Actress Shabna Azmi madea very pretinent statement: I will be very happy to see a person wearign BAndh Gala coat/Kurta makign apresentaiton in Engllish;so also I am very happy if a person weari9gn a western suit makign apresentation  in HINDI.Seniors donot Groom. They expect a finished product as a recruit. The training  shops thriving  in India donot GROOM.Ask  them why not?Presetnation skills donot mean PP or power point;how do you present yoruself, conduct yourself.Personality development suited to a profession is improtant in openign doors.GURUKULS Groomed in ancient India.
We in India have many persons adept in GROOMING.Enlsit them as resoruce persons for our group.

Hi all,
i wish to say Grooming in PR is very important. This is in a bid to guarantee competence in the job, consistency and continuity. A member raised a question if the senior colleagues have the required skill sets?.This is pertinent because some seniors might groom wrongly or it might not be substantial to carry/ do the profession effectively as they ought to.
My worry is 'will the seniors be willing to groom/ to impart knowledge? There are some settings or some professionals who i have noticed do not want to share knowledge or shape others. They think you will overthrow them in the office or position.
What I can say is that seniors should be be willing to groom others. They have been in the field, with much experience. They (senior) too should also be willing to learn from the young professionals. They are just from school with fresh ideas on the professional. The senior should listen to them and help put theory into practice. Grooming again is important and it can be a two-way issue

Best regards
Ewane

Hi Narren,

Good initiative indeed... Just a small concern here, you said "Grooming" of professionals by seniors. Does seniors have the required skill sets????? In most of the places they don't have.

We can discuss the same as well....

Dear Members

Can we disucss on Grooming in PR. Sometimes i hear from fellow professionals that they dont have suitable candidate to head the agency or handle clients. It makes me think about "Grooming" of professionals by seniors. One can acquire knowledge is through reading, meeting senior people in the industry and ones own experience. Apart from these activities undertaken by companies and grooming plays a major role in shaping the professional.

Can we discuss issues and challenges in this.

Best regards
Narren
