RE: [Image_Management] Grooming in PR

Dear Colleagues,

We’ve all contributed well; but let’s not lose focus on the key issue of seniors grooming the younger professionals.

First, we must realize that in any professional field grooming is imperative for continuity, efficiency and attainment of full potentials.

Currently, world class organizations have even translated this to “Coaching and Mentoring” which is a process of guiding and counseling of professionals to enable them attain their full potentials and consequently established forums of “Knowledge Sharing” among professionals which is sharing of experiences.

The issue here is that this process is a 2 dimensional process which involve the willingness for the seniors to groom, lack of which could arise from insecurity feelings of the seniors and the willingness of the young professionals to learn; lack of which could arise from ego factor; the fact that they are fresh from school and believe they have all it takes to be exemplary even without experience.

Best regards

The true meaning of being a professional is to adhere to the many standards of your career area (written, unwritten, ethical and otherwise) regardless of where and when and for whom you work. This should be the goal towards which you must work.

So I would reframe the question to state - What are the standards and ethics of Professional behaviour for Public Relations professional?

What are the required competencies (Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes) to become known as a professional? Obviously there are codes of ethics to adhere to, but apart from that?

Grooming?

Manners, etiquette, style of dress, professionalism?

Which part do you want to discuss?

Hi all,
i wish to say Grooming in PR is very important. This is in a bid to guarantee competence in the job, consistency and continuity. A member raised a question if the senior colleagues have the required skill sets?.This is pertinent because some seniors might groom wrongly or it might not be substantial to carry/ do the profession effectively as they ought to.
My worry is 'will the seniors be willing to groom/ to impart knowledge? There are some settings or some professionals who i have noticed do not want to share knowledge or shape others. They think you will overthrow them in the office or position.
What I can say is that seniors should be be willing to groom others. They have been in the field, with much experience. They (senior) too should also be willing to learn from the young professionals. They are just from school with fresh ideas on the professional. The senior should listen to them and help put theory into practice. Grooming again is important and it can be a two-way issue

Best regards
Ewane

Hi Narren,

Good initiative indeed... Just a small concern here, you said "Grooming" of professionals by seniors. Does seniors have the required skill sets????? In most of the places they don't have.

We can discuss the same as well....

Dear Members

Can we disucss on Grooming in PR. Sometimes i hear from fellow professionals that they dont have suitable candidate to head the agency or handle clients. It makes me think about "Grooming" of professionals by seniors. One can acquire knowledge is through reading, meeting senior people in the industry and ones own experience. Apart from these activities undertaken by companies and grooming plays a major role in shaping the professional.

Can we discuss issues and challenges in this.

Best regards
Narren
