Re: [prpoint] Dignity in resignation

Hi,

Organisations depend on senior management officials and when one leaves all of a sudden then it has an all round impact - staff, clients.

A senior official would junk his present job mainly on two counts (a) the new offer is very attractive (job profile and other reasons) which his present employer cannot offer and he is under pressure to decide immediately.

In this case if his relationship with the existing employer is good then he would inform his seniors/peers and try to work out a way so that the company would not suffer. The employer understanding the official's dilemma should rise up to the situation by extending all support.

Who knows he might return with new skill sets after sometime.

On the other hand if the current relationship is not cordial or problematic then he would jump at the new offer. If a person who has served the company for long years and jumps out suddenly then there is something wrong with the organisation and not with that person.

An objective analysis of why, when, what, where and who such a thing happened would give the answer as to how such episode does not occur again.

However the official runs the risk of tarring his professional reputation though the prospective employer would have factored this aspect while hiring him.

In the case of small companies when a senior manager quits all of  a sudden, the owner takes up the additional responsibility till a replacement is found. Other companies either hire a fresh guy or promote internally. If it is the former (the most likely decision) it would result in bad morale within the company. It also reflects badly on the management as it has failed in planning succession at senior level.

My view is that once an employee decides to quit then it better for the company to relieve him as quick as possible. The reasons - he will be disinterested in his job; his thoughts will be about the new job and the actions he would take; falling output; morale of other employees would get affected.

The one cardinal rule to be kept in mind by the employers and employees is - Men may come and men may go. But the company goes on for ever.

Regards

Hi All,
Though one has the freedom to take one's own decisions in life, there are certaion tangible and intangible courtesies thta are expected , especially at senior levels. We get so worked up when juniors do this to us, but when very senior people do this , it is unpardonable. The character , moral and ethical nature , temperament, confidence , etc etc all come to the fore , negatively.
Have been working for 38 years now , pan India and am in touch even with my first employer.
Maybe we all belong to a bygone era. But the ethos and culture , and the respect and relationships that I still enjoy with all colleagues past and present, go to show the school we all belong to. Cheers to us.

Dear All,

I have absolutely different kind of experience, since this is my third job.  I was working with one of the Tata group of companies in Jamshedpur and left the company in the year 2003.  The decision was absolutely personal and emotional as well.  I shifted from my birth place (Jamshedpur) to my mother's birth place (Srirangam) - some may feel what a contrast.

In my dream I never thought of leaving a city like Jamshedpur and company like Tinplate Co. of India Ltd (Now Tata Tinplate). When I expressed my desire to leave the company and the reason behind the separation, the MD was really concerned and he personally met me three times before accepting my request.  My HR head was also asked me to reconsider my decision, as I was one of the employee who had received Awards for driving excellence.  It was a very emotional exit and I still have contact with all my old friends in Jamshedpur and I even come to know what's happening in the company.  Great people and great place to live, which I still miss a lot.

Then I joined a small group of hotels and worked for three years. I got another offer and I decided to quit the hotel. I informed the management of the hotel well in advance and requested to relieve me in one month.  I completed all the work and it was a very graceful exit.  Even today, I speak to my MD, ED and GM and they too keep in touch me.

It is very important to be highly professional and ethical in your work to be recognised for long time even if you leave the organisation.

All the best.
