[prpoint] Re: Why PR bodies conspicuously silent about Radiagate?

Dear friends,

It is true that Nira Radia went pas the fine line between ethical public affairs and lobbying. I have been following the discussion on Nira Radia with keen interest. The group members seem to be in agreement, when we ask PRCAI to come clean on the issue. I have certain questions and I would like the group to deliberate on the issues. The questions are :

  • Many a times media persons gather information from a non-suspecting person "off the record" and then publish it. But when General Musharraf had a closed door meeting with some senior Indian Editors when he visited India as President of Pakistan, the entire meeting was broadcast by a TV channel and the editors felt cheated, as the meeting was supposed to be "off the record". So let's discuss the sanctity of "off the record".
  • Many large publication houses pick up stake in various companies (on barter basis) and then promote the company systematically through their media vehicles. One of the media houses also has stake in a PR company to promote this business in other publications as well. Is it ethical ?
  • If it is true that Nira Radia successfully lobbied for ministerial berths for certain people, how can then we say that Sonia Gandhi and Dr. Manmohan Singh are really "innocent" ?
  • Almost all, yes, almost all the PR companies offer gifts to journalists to get their news stories published. Journalists gladly accept the gifts and play in the hands of PR people.
  • Politicians and bureaucrats have the discretion of showering favours on the persons of their liking. Is there a system to check the system ?
  • Are we really "truthful" when we file our income tax returns ?
  • Do we always insist on a bill while buying things and do we insist on a bank transaction while making payments ?

What I am trying to say is that the system is such that it makes people corrupt. Are we trying to clean the system or are we trying to go for a "witch hunt" and catch an easy prey ?

Warm regards.

It is really sad and unfortunate that the person you are dragging a reputed PR person in this needless controversy with utter disregard to propriety as well as deference. Among the multiple roles played by media, the most important one is to enable readers make intelligent choices
