Hello, I too saw this way of advertising in their Indore Edition too. And I said to myself, "(This) one few over the cuckoo's nest!" It is the title of a famous movie from past. Once in 1990s, Times of India, Mumbai (or Bombay then) published a series of advertisements for a tea brand "Editor's Choice". It was a half page thing. Remarkably, the ad carried the Elephant Logo from Times Mast Head. The campaign ran for more than a month, every week. Or probably more insertions. It appeared in Sunday Times too. I made a strong representation to ASCI- Advertising Standards Council of India. I think their office then was some place in VT (Bori Bunder Area) area and later shifted to Tardeo. Times is known as "Old Lady of Bori Bunder" on the side. I received a two line letter from ASCI, informing they were unable to act on my 'complaint' as as required by ASCI procedure, I had not enclosed a copy of the 'offending' advertisement. And by the time I protested back, it seems the advertisement was withdrawn with a comment that it was a "Limited Insertion Advertisement" for a "Limited Edition of Tea- Editor's Choice". We all have heard from our ancestors, "Locks are for used to prevent the common people from entering the house; to thieves they offer no resistance." such are the devices at command of them 'Powerful & Money Bags". Story of Newspapers, wherever, is intertwined with questionable acts; dubious deals, and of course, the malignancy of 'paid news'. The Freedom of Press has little to do with it. An Urdu word Neeyat, has everything to do with it. Our own Mohan Das Karam Chand Gandhi had pondered over these issues. Here is Mahatma Gandhi's take on Journalism & newspapers- QUOTE Gandhi always defended liberty of the press. He stopped printing his journals when any Government order restricted him from publishing his views. Having acquired editor's expertise and a reputation as editor, he warned, 'Newspapers are fast becoming the people's Bible, Koran and Gita rolled in one. A journalist's duty is to teach people to be brave, not to instill fear into them.' In his opinion the aim of journalism was service: 'Journalism should never be prostituted for selfish ends.' UNQUOTE After such a quote, I only wish to stress that every income opportunity must be availed. But, the income must come from ethical application of resources at one's disposal. If Police and Army started using their weapons indiscriminately, many of us wouldn't be around to write such mails. navendu 9893009099 --- On Fri, 24/8/12, megha gupta <meghaa86@yahoo.com.sg> wrote:
