Hi
Probably members are aware that Justice Markandey Katju, Chairman of Press Council of India has given two important suggestions and constituted a committee to look into this.
1. To supervise and regulate journalism courses in the educational institutions; and
2. To make a qualification a mandatory to join any media.
Presently, the courses offered by many colleges on journalism, public relations, communication are very pathetic. The teaching staff are not experienced enough to teach complicated subjects. The institutions do not invite practising professionals to interact with the students. We have also discussed in the prpoint group many times earlier.
The syllabus followed by many of the Universities are highly outdated. I find that even the technology related communication is not included in the syllabus. The senior professors in the Journalism departments do not update their knowledge and skills. I find many of the academicians do not expose the students to latest trends in communication.
This results in producing more number of students, who are not suitable for the industry. Many of the students, after coming out of the colleges are not able to write even 500 words properly. Some of the leading branded institutions send out the students with 'bad attitude'.
On the industry side, many of the English and Regional Media are not happy with the work performance and attitude of many of these young people coming out of the journalism courses. No doubt, there are exceptionally good professionals coming out of these colleges too.
Today, when I interacted with senior journalists of English and Regional language media, they prefer to train any candidate with good writing and speaking skills. They say, the performance of professionals joining without mass communication qualification are better than those who come with qualifications.
I agree, this cannot be generalised. Success in Journalism, Public Relations, Communication field depends on individual attitude and capability.
Justice Katju has posted his views and orders in his facebook. The Committee constituted by him has more of academicians, particularly from North. I have also suggested to him in the Facebook wall that the committee should be widened with working media editors from north, south, east and west covering both English and Language media.
I suggest the members to share their views in this forum. After a week, I will consolidate the views and submit to the Committee constituted by the Press Council of India.
