hi

Yesterday, Supreme Court  passed the final judgement on 1993 Mumbai blast case.  In this blast, the first ever in India using RDX, 257 people died and more than 700 people got injured.

Sanjay Dutt was first booked under TADA Act for possessing the arms used in this blast.  According to Mr M N Singh, then Mumbai Police Commissioner who investigated  this case, Sunil Dutt used all his political influence to remove TADA charges.  Though he was tried under TADA court, he was punished by  TADA court with  6 years of imprisonment under Arms Act.

Now the Supreme Court has reduced this to 5 years, the minimum under Arms Act and asked him to undergo the imprisonment.  Since he was already in jail for 18 months, he needs to further undergo a jail term of further three and half years.

Since yesterday, the entire media is debating this issue, leaving behind many national and top issues.  Many of the film  celebrities, including Rajnikanth now plead for mercy to free him.  Hon'ble Justice Katju has already submitted an appeal to the Governor of Maharastra seeking pardon. Jaya Bachan and Jaya Pradha say that they would meet the Governor pleading for mercy.  Film producers are lobbying for the release, because they would lose huge investment, if Sanjay Dutt goes to jail.

When an act of terrorism happens, hundreds of people die and many families suffer. Even the nation's economy gets disturbed.  When the punishment is given by the highest judiciary, vested interests talk about 'mercy' and 'human rights'.  If all the celebrities like actors, politicians, ministers and sports persons get punished, these 'katjus' start raising their voice in their favour shamelessly, probably to gain publicity.

These people talk about the suffering of the family of Sanjay Dutt.  Did they think of the trauma undergone by 257 families who lost one or more of their members and other 700 people who got injured heavily.  The reports say that Sanjay Dutt was keeping  the arms used in the blast in his house and also met underworld terrorists who were behind this blast.  Arguing that he was keeping these machine guns, cartridges and hand grenades for his self defence is shameful.  Why he needed bombs for self defence?  He could have engaged a security agency or got the police escort or even obtained the formal license.

Sanjay Dutt should have been charged under TADA Act and should have been given life imprisonment like others for helping the terrorists.  In this same case, other accused people who committed lesser crime have been punished heavily under TADA Act.  Because of his political connections, he escaped with reduced punishment of 5 years, under Arms Act.

If every celebrity involved in the crime  or terrorism is glorified like this by the vested interests, then the judicial system cannot function in this country.

It is highly shameful that these supporters want Sanjay Dutt  to be pardoned  on that ground  that he is having children, mentally suffered, promoted Gandhi philosophies, etc.  The families of the blast victims also have mentally suffererd and their children are continuously suffering.

In the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, one of the accused who supplied battery, is facing death row.  Sanjay Dutt has done greater offense than this person who supplied battery.  If he is not politically connected, the Court would have punished him with life imprisonment.

Sanjay Dutt getting the punishment will send the right signal to all the celebrities that they cannot get away after committing crime or assisting terrorism.
