[prpoint] Re: Right to Information and Indian Companies

RTI has also bears the acronym, Redressal through Information. RTI
follows the basic PR principles that enables an organisation to take
care of its stakeholders through transparency, ethical working, and
honestly sharing the truth.

Fundamental to the success and effectiveness of an organisation is
squarely dependent upon the efficacy of the knowledge or information
management. The first step is to fortify internal communication
management system so that the first stakeholders, the internal
public, or the members of the organisation, are aware as to what is
the mission of their organisation, and what is their role, and the
organisation's goals.

In a way, besides transparent governance, RTI has enabled the people
working within the government departments to learn about their own
organisation, its functioning, and information available within the
department.

This is a pre-requisite strength that makes a representative of a
government department responsible to function for the betterment of
the 'publics' it serves.

However, the situation at the state headquarters and some of the
central ministries might be getting attuned to the RTI requirements,
yet there is much to be desired at the district and tehsil levels,
where RTI is still considered a burdensome activity that deprives
the officials of the power that they could earlier wield by holding
on to the information.

The earlier social activists like Aruna Roy, who stimulated the
birth of RTI, are still fighting for the rights of the people in
different parts of the country.

Since the corporate sector is also not immune to the scope of RTI
Act, the greatest challenge for the PR practitioners is to use the
lessons of its implementation by the government departments, for
empowering the people within their own organisations to manage
information appropriately and audit the organisational mission and
its functioning with the corporate communication to ensure that both
synchronise.

The PRSI in Chandigarh is working with the RTI Commission and has
conducted programmes to generate awareness amongst the various
government officials. And professional communicators anywhere can
definitely contribute to speed up the process of good governance by
sharing their skills, expertise, and knowledge in managing
information within the organisation.
